The Baptism of Jesus
About six months had passed since John the Baptist first began preaching in the wilderness of Judea. Crowds of people streamed to the Jordan River to hear his urgent call to repentance and to be baptized. One day, amid the bustling crowd, a thirty-year-old man from Nazareth stepped forward.
It was Jesus.
He walked up to John and asked to be baptized.
This simple request left John completely stunned.
John knew that Jesus was not like anyone else. Even before his birth, John had been set apart to prepare the way for the Messiah. He had surely heard of the miraculous events surrounding Jesus’ birth. Thus, John recognized that the man standing before him was the One sent by God.
In deep humility, John objected:
"I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
John knew that the baptism he performed was a symbol of repentance for sins. But Jesus was completely sinless; He had no sins to repent of.
Yet, Jesus gently replied:
"Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness."
For Jesus, baptism carried an entirely different meaning. He was not being baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Instead, He was publicly presenting Himself to Jehovah, declaring His readiness to do the complete will of His Heavenly Father.
For thirty years, Jesus had lived a quiet, ordinary life as a carpenter. Now, that chapter was closing. The divine mission entrusted to Him by God was about to begin.
Heaven Opens Up
As John lowered Jesus into the waters of the Jordan and brought Him back up, something extraordinary took place.
The heavens suddenly tore open.
John saw the Holy Spirit descend upon Jesus in the gentle form of a dove. This was the exact sign Jehovah had promised him: the one upon whom the Spirit descended would be the Messiah Israel had been waiting for.
But there was more than just a visible sign.
A majestic voice resonated from the heavens, saying:
"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
It was the voice of Jehovah Himself.
For the first time in Jesus’ earthly life, His Heavenly Father publicly declared to mankind that Jesus was His beloved Son. At that very moment, God anointed Him with His Holy Spirit, officially appointing Him as the long-promised Messiah.
At this monumental threshold, Jesus entered a completely new phase of His life. The Scriptures indicate that as the heavens opened, He was given full recollection of His heavenly pre-existence and the vast spiritual mission His Father had entrusted to Him before He came to earth. Everything became beautifully clear.
Just as Adam was the first son directly created by God, Jesus was also the Son of God. But unlike Adam, Jesus would remain completely loyal to His Father under every trial.
From that day forward, Jesus embarked on His journey to preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God. For the next three and a half years, He would teach the crowds, heal the sick, bring hope to the hopeless, and reveal the Father’s love through every word and deed—a path that would ultimately lead Him to the cross to give His life for the salvation of all.

Instead, his eyes held a strange, heavy intensity—an ancient, knowing look that made Rachel’s breath catch in her throat.
"Why were you all crying?" Thomas asked softly, his arm shifting slightly to pull Madison closer to his side. "It was just a very long nap."
