Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Mirror

The ambulance lights swept across the high arched windows of the Moretti estate, slicing through the heavy autumn mist in rhythmic flashes of blue and red. Down in the grand foyer, two paramedics moved with practiced, quiet efficiency, securing Emily Bennett onto a stretcher.

Adrian stood at the top of the grand staircase, his face etched in stone. Beside him, three-year-old Lucy still clutched two of his fingers, her small hand warm against his cold skin. She had stopped crying, but her gray eyes remained fixed on her mother's pale face as the gurney was wheeled out through the heavy oak doors.

Michael Russo stepped up beside his boss, holding a encrypted tablet. "The estate is locked down, Adrian. No one enters, no one leaves. Security collected all phones from the night staff and housekeepers twenty minutes ago."

"The cameras?" Adrian asked, his voice dangerously low.

"That’s where it gets complicated," Michael said, swiping a thumb across the screen. "The feed for the second-floor east wing went dark at 11:45 PM. A physical bypass. Someone pulled the hard link from the terminal inside the security office."

Adrian didn't flinch. "Only four people have physical access to that terminal, Michael."

"I know," Michael replied quietly. "And one of them is sitting in the guest suite right now, waiting for her lawyer."

Adrian turned his gaze toward the guest wing where Vanessa Carlisle was currently being held. The marriage was supposed to solidify an alliance between the Moretti syndicate and the Carlisle financial empire—a merger eighteen months in the making. It was meant to buy peace. Instead, it had brought blood into his private hallway.

Lucy pulled softly on his fingers. "Is Mommy going to the doctor?"

Adrian knelt down until he was at eye level with the child. Up close, he could see tiny flecks of silver in her gray eyes—the same eyes as the quiet housekeeper who had worked in his home for three months without ever making a sound.

"Yes, Lucy," Adrian said gently. "She's going to the hospital so the doctors can fix her ouchies."

"The pretty lady pushed her," Lucy whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she leaned in close. "Mommy dropped the papers, and the pretty lady got angry."

Adrian’s breath hitched. "What papers, Lucy?"

"The dark papers from the desk," Lucy said, pointing a small finger back down the hallway toward the private library. "Mommy was cleaning. She found them under the rug."

Michael caught Adrian’s eye immediately. The dark papers under the library rug were not household accounts. They were the untraceable shipping manifests for the syndicate's private docks along Lake Michigan—documents that only Adrian, Michael, and Vanessa’s father had ever known existed.

"Michael," Adrian said, standing up smoothly. "Take Lucy to the kitchen. Tell Mrs. Hale to make her warm milk and keep her there. Assign two armed guards to the door."

"And Vanessa?"

"I’m going to go ask my fiancée what she was looking for in my library."
