Mary: Pregnant Before Marriage
Three months after visiting her relative Elizabeth in the hill country of Judea, Mary returned home to Nazareth. By this time, she was about four months pregnant. Soon, her condition would become physically obvious, and everyone in the village would notice.
Just the thought of it was enough to terrify any young woman of her time.
Mary was betrothed to Joseph, a gentle and upright carpenter. According to Jewish custom, betrothal was as legally binding as marriage, even though the couple did not yet live together. Under the Law of Moses, if a betrothed woman was found to have been unfaithful, the punishment was incredibly severe.
Yet, Mary knew she was completely pure.
She was not carrying a child conceived of man, but by the holy power of God, just as the angel Gabriel had foretold. However, how could she possibly explain a miracle so unbelievable that it defied human understanding?

After months of separation, Joseph was overjoyed to see Mary return. But that joy quickly faded into utter confusion when he learned she was pregnant. Mary gently explained everything that had happened, from the visitation of the angel to the miracle God had performed inside her.
Joseph listened.
He knew Mary. He knew she was virtuous, sincere, and deeply devoted to God. He loved her and had never once doubted her character. But what she was describing went beyond anything he had ever known or heard of. He simply could not wrap his mind around such a miracle.

That night, as Joseph lay tossing and turning, Jehovah sent an angel to him in a dream.
The angel comforted him, saying:
"Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
When Joseph woke up, every shred of doubt in his heart vanished. He realized that God had entrusted him with a sacred and extraordinary responsibility: to protect the woman God had chosen, and to raise the promised Messiah.
Without a single moment of hesitation, Joseph did exactly as the angel commanded. He publicly took Mary home as his wife, letting the community know they were officially married. Yet, he deeply respected Mary and kept her a virgin until she gave birth to her son.

Rachel stopped. Her fingers, gripping Madison’s arms, suddenly registered something that sent a jolt of pure electricity down her spine.
The air rising from the depths of the casket did not smell like embalming fluid. It didn't smell like the heavy, suffocating scent of lilies and preserved cosmetics that had dominated the room all afternoon.

A faint, natural warmth was returning to his cheeks. Instead, his eyes held a strange, heavy intensity—an ancient, knowing look that made Rachel’s breath catch in her throat.
"Why were you all crying?" Thomas asked softly, his arm shifting slightly to pull Madison closer to his side. "It was just a very long nap."
