Chapter 1 - The Courtroom Floor

Vanessa grabbed the girl’s hair and yanked.
Nine-year-old Sophie cried out as her stepmother pulled her backward in the middle of family court.
“Stop embarrassing me,” Vanessa hissed.
Then she shoved Sophie away.
The little girl stumbled and dropped to the courtroom floor in front of the judge, the bailiff, the court clerk, and several families waiting for their own hearings.
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa stood over Sophie in an expensive cream suit, perfectly styled and completely unashamed.
Across the aisle, Sophie’s godmother, Elena Brooks, slowly rose from her chair.
Elena was a family-law attorney, but Vanessa never treated her like one.
To Vanessa, Elena was merely the unwanted godmother who kept interfering with the life Vanessa claimed to control.
“You have no authority over my child,” Vanessa said loudly. “I’m her legal guardian. You’re nothing.”
Sophie pushed herself upright, her hair hanging across her frightened face.
Elena wanted to run to her.
Instead, she stayed still.
Her hands rested on a closed navy-blue binder on the counsel table.
Vanessa mistook that silence for fear.
She smiled at the people watching.
“This girl lies whenever she doesn’t get her way,” she announced. “And Elena keeps encouraging it because she wants to steal her from me.”
Several people in the courtroom looked down.
One woman covered her mouth.
The bailiff took a step toward Sophie, but Judge Mercer raised one hand, watching everything carefully.
Elena didn’t argue.
She didn’t shout.
She didn’t tell Vanessa what she had spent six weeks collecting.
She simply asked, “Are you finished?”
Vanessa laughed.
“Finished? I’m just getting started.”
She pointed at Sophie.
“Tell them you tripped.”
Sophie’s lower lip trembled.
Vanessa’s voice hardened.
“Say it.”
Sophie stared at the floor.
Elena watched Vanessa closely.
The threats.
The demand that Sophie lie.
The public display of control.
None of it was stopping.
And Elena wasn’t scared.
She was waiting.
Waiting for Vanessa to show the judge exactly who she was when she believed nobody could take her power away.
Judge Mercer finally looked at the navy binder.
“Ms. Brooks,” she said, “is that the evidence referenced in your emergency guardianship petition?”
Elena placed one hand on the cover.
“Yes, Your Honor.”
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“That binder is full of exaggerations. School gossip. Misunderstandings. A desperate woman trying to play mother.”
Elena opened the binder just far enough for several colored evidence tabs to become visible.
Dated photographs.
School incident reports.
Transcribed voice messages.
A sealed document bearing Sophie’s late father’s notarized signature.
Vanessa saw only the top edges.
She didn’t understand what they meant.
Not yet.
But her fingers tightened around Sophie’s hair again as she leaned down and whispered, “Your godmother can’t save you.”
Elena looked directly at the judge.
May you like
“Your Honor, before this binder is opened, I ask that the courtroom recording be preserved.”
Vanessa smirked, gave Sophie’s hair one final cruel tug, and said, “Open your little binder,” as Elena slid it beneath the judge’s waiting hand.
