Chapter 7 - ALLISON'S CONFESSION

The penthouse showroom was entirely dark, save for the single amber lamp casting long shadows across the concrete floors. It was three days after the federal compliance freeze hit Campbell Holdings. At 11:00 PM, the private elevator chimed.
Meredith didn't move from her armchair as the doors slid open to reveal Allison. The golden bride of the Campbell family looked completely unrecognizable. Her expensive white silk wedding gown had been replaced by a rumpled, oversized trench coat, her hair was disheveled, and her face was heavily swollen from hours of crying. The multi-millionaire real estate heir she had married had already filed for an emergency annulment to protect his own family's assets from the Campbell contagion.
Allison took three steps into the room and collapsed onto her knees, her manicured hands clutching the edge of Meredith's glass desk as she wept hysterically.
"Meredith... please," Allison choked out, her voice a raw, desperate gasp. "You have to tell Nathan Reed to stop. Father’s heart can't take it. The federal marshals are locking the doors to the estate tomorrow morning. They are repossessing everything. We have nothing left."
Meredith looked down at her younger sister, her face an unreadable mask of absolute, glacial calm. "Nathan didn't do this, Allison. I did."
Allison’s breath hitched, her head snapping up as she stared at her sister in utter disbelief. "You? No... you’re just an analyst. You don't have this kind of power."
"I am the sole founder of Aegis Capital, the entity that holds eighty percent of your husband's family debt," Meredith said, her voice dropping into that quiet, terrifyingly analytical register. "And I am the blood daughter of Arthur Sterling—the man our parents murdered to build the very house you grew up in."
Allison went completely frozen, the room’s air turning to liquid ice as the truth settled over her. She slumped back onto the floor, a broken, hollow laugh escaping her lips.
"They... they told me you were just weak," Allison whispered, her tears smearing her mascara as she looked at her hands. "They told me from the time I was seven years old that I had to surpass you in every single metric. Mother told me that if you ever became successful, if you ever took control of the board, I would be left completely penniless because of an old legal covenant. They engineered the rivalry, Meredith. They forced me to hate you."
Allison covered her face, her shoulders heaving with a deep, historical guilt.
"The waiter at the wedding... the one who spilled the wine on your gown," Allison confessed, her voice barely audible over the hum of the penthouse ventilation. "I hired him. I paid him ten thousand dollars to humiliate you in front of the cameras. I wanted to break you completely so you would leave the city and never look back. But I swear to you, Meredith... I didn't know about Arthur Sterling. I didn't know our father was a murderer. I just wanted them to love me the most."

Meredith sat in the silence for a long moment. She didn't offer a hand to help her sister up, and she didn't offer words of forgiveness. The damage had been done over two decades of engineered malice. But for the first time, she saw Allison not as a victorious enemy, but as another casualty of Richard and Eleanor's monstrous greed.
"I don't hate you, Allison," Meredith said softly, looking out the window at the distant city lights. "But the dominoes have already cleared the board. Go build a life that doesn't belong to a stolen name."
