Chapter 9 - EMPIRE OF LIES

Thomas Vance walked down the center aisle of the federal courtroom, the heavy rubber soles of his boots clicking rhythmically against the polished oak floorboards. He kept his head down, his eyes carefully avoiding the defense table where Constance Vance sat. The aristocratic matriarch had finally lost her porcelain composure; her gloved hands were clenched into white-knuckled fists, her eyes wide with a feral, predatory panic that no amount of old money pedigree could hide.

Thomas ascended the wooden steps of the witness stand, placed his hand on the Bible, and swore the oath. His voice, when he finally spoke into the silver microphone, was a gravelly, trembling whisper that commanded absolute silence across the packed gallery.

"For fifteen years, I wasn't just a driver," Thomas said, his fingers tightly gripping the edge of the wooden railing. "I was the man who handled the logistics that didn't go into the official corporate brochures. I did the clean-up work for Constance Vance."

Katherine stepped to the podium, her presence radiating a cold, clinical dominance. "Mr. Vance, let’s speak specifically about the night of October twenty-fourth of last year. What were your instructions regarding The Sovereign?"

"Spencer called me at midnight from the yacht," Thomas confessed, looking up to lock eyes with the judge. "He was panicked. He said he had lost his temper and hit Miss Madeline hard enough to crack her ribs, and she was unconscious in the VIP cabin. I called Constance immediately. She told me to stay calm. She instructed me to drive to the marina, override the yacht's central digital security servers, and erase the internal surveillance logs for that entire twelve-hour block. She told me if the police asked, we were to say Miss Madeline had slipped on the wet deck due to her chronic vertigo."

The courtroom erupted into a chaotic storm of frantic murmurs. Journalists leaned over the press benches, their pens flying across their pads as Spencer violently slammed his hands against the defense table. "He’s lying! He’s a disgruntled employee we fired for embezzlement! This is a setup!"

"Order!" the federal judge roared, slamming his heavy wooden gavel three times until the gallery quieted. "One more outburst from the defense table, Mr. Vance, and I will have you removed and held in immediate contempt."

Katherine didn't let up, her gaze shifting to the yellowed manila folder resting on her table—the file her husband had compiled eight long years ago. "Let us move further back into your employment, Mr. Vance. Let us talk about the night of October fourteenth, 2018. The night federal investigator William Carter died on the mountain pass."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. Madeline leaned forward, her hands gripping her knees so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Thomas Vance let out a broken, ragged sigh, a tear cutting through the deep wrinkles of his face. "William Carter had found the blind routing paths. He had uncovered the Zenith Alpha accounts that Constance was using to clean foreign money from the shipping syndicates. He was going to file the grand jury indictments on Tuesday morning. On Sunday night, Constance called me into her private study. She handed me a set of industrial wire cutters and a master key to the parking garage where Mr. Carter kept his SUV."

The witness paused, swallowing hard as he looked toward Katherine, his eyes swimming with a decade of unpunished guilt.

"She told me that a persistent virus had to be permanently removed from the system before it infected the host. I went into that garage at 2:00 AM. I cleanly severed the secondary brake lines and blocked the pressure release valves on William Carter’s vehicle. I knew the pass he took home every night. I knew exactly what would happen when he hit that sharp, blind curve at sixty miles per hour. It wasn't a mechanical failure, Your Honor. It was a pre-meditated execution. And Constance Vance signed the check for it."

"Lies! All of it!" Constance shrieked, shattering her silent composure completely as she surged to her feet. She tore off her silk gloves, throwing them violently toward the witness stand. "You are a parasite! I built this city! You have no authority over my family!"

But before her attorneys could pull her back down, the heavy double rear doors of the courtroom swung open with a definitive, thunderous crash. Three high-ranking federal prosecutors from the Department of Justice, flanked by a dozen heavily armed federal marshals in tactical gear, marched down the center aisle. They carried a sealed, multi-count federal criminal indictment containing active arrest warrants for first-degree capital murder, interstate wire fraud, and grand racketeering.

Seeing the heavy steel handcuffs being drawn from the marshals' belts, Spencer completely lost his mind. The psychotic arrogance that had dictated his life evaporated into pure, cowardly terror. He violently shoved Harrison out of his way, leaped over the gallery railing, and bolted through the emergency side exit into the blinding rain-slicked streets of Charleston.

The federal pursuit lasted less than twenty minutes. Spencer’s luxury sports car was aggressively cornered on the elevated interstate bridge by four unmarked black federal SUVs. With his tires blown out against the tactical spike strips, he was dragged out of the vehicle and slammed face-first onto the wet, muddy asphalt, his custom-tailored suit ruined as a flock of news helicopters captured his definitive, public downfall from the gray sky above.
