Chapter 2 - The Coffee Was His Mistake

The coffee had been his mistake.

Not because it hurt her.

He knew it would hurt her.

That was why he threw it.

It was his mistake because the mug shattered on a floor he did not own, in an apartment he had lied about, in front of a woman he believed would keep protecting him.

For months, Derek had told everyone the Miami apartment was his.

His investment.

His downtown view.

His “clean restart” after the market turned.

Suzanne believed him.

His friends believed him.

His clients believed him.

Even Skylar let him say it at dinner parties because correcting Derek in public always cost her something later.

But the apartment had belonged to Skylar before the marriage.

Her father bought it years earlier through a trust after Skylar survived her first serious illness and moved to Miami for treatment.

He told her it was not luxury.

It was escape.

A place no man could sell, mortgage, trade, or claim because he had smiled during the wedding vows.

Skylar used to think that was dramatic.

Then she married Derek.

Derek did not become cruel all at once.

He became entitled first.

He moved into the apartment and called it ours.

Then mine when he was showing it off.

Then family property when he wanted to use it as collateral.

The first time Skylar refused to sign refinancing papers, he laughed.

“You don’t understand business.”

The second time, he said, “You’re embarrassing me.”

The third time, he brought Suzanne.

His younger sister had always admired him in the way families admire the person who scares them most.

Suzanne wore expensive clothes, spoke softly, and carried Derek’s opinions like designer handbags.

“She’s just trying to protect you,” Suzanne told Skylar. “Derek knows how to manage money.”

Skylar looked at the account statements showing transfers she had not authorized.

“No,” she said. “Derek knows how to move money.”

That was when Derek’s face changed.

Not in front of Suzanne.

Not yet.

Later.

After the door closed.

After the compliments ended.

After the apartment became quiet enough for him to be honest.

“You think you can humiliate me in front of my sister?”

Skylar stood near the kitchen island.

“I think your sister should know what you’re asking me to sign.”

He moved closer.

“You don’t get to decide what my family knows.”

“That’s funny,” she whispered. “Because your family keeps deciding what belongs to me.”

The coffee was on the counter.

Hot.

Fresh.

In the white mug she bought the first week she moved in.

Derek picked it up.

Skylar saw his hand move.

She had one second to understand.

Then the coffee hit the left side of her face.

Heat exploded across her cheek.

The mug slipped from his hand and shattered near the doorway.

Suzanne screamed.

Derek did not.

He only stared at Skylar as she stumbled backward, one hand over her burning face.

Then he said, “Look what you made me do.”

That sentence did what the coffee could not.

It ended the marriage inside her.

Suzanne kept repeating, “Derek, oh my God.”

But she did not call 911.

She did not help Skylar to the sink.

She did not grab towels.

She looked at Derek first.

Always Derek first.

Skylar walked out alone.

Barefoot.

Burning.

Holding one hand to her face.

At the hospital, the intake nurse asked what happened.

For a moment, the old answer rose automatically.

An accident.

A spill.

A mistake.

Derek had trained those words into her.

But then the nurse gently moved Skylar’s hand and saw the pattern of the burn, the bruising near her jaw, the old mark near her wrist.

The nurse did not accuse.

She simply asked, “Did someone do this to you?”

Skylar closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“My husband.”

The room changed after that.

Not dramatically.

Professionally.

Safely.

The doctor documented the burn.

A social worker entered.

Photographs were taken.

The report was prepared.

A police officer came to the hospital.

Skylar told the truth once.

Then again.

Then again, until it became less like confession and more like fact.

Derek threw hot coffee at me.

He has threatened me before.

He tried to force me to sign property papers.

His sister was there.

The apartment is mine.
