Chapter 7: The Hearing

Chapter 7: The Hearing

The first hearing was supposed to be procedural.

That was what Angela said.

“Temporary protective orders. Asset restrictions. Medical authority. Nothing dramatic.”

She was wrong.

The courthouse steps were packed.

Vanessa’s social media post had spread through local gossip pages. Half the town thought I was a cold husband abandoning a devoted wife. The other half thought Vanessa was hiding something. Reporters stood near the entrance, hungry for tears.

Vanessa arrived in a black dress and sunglasses, walking between two attorneys like a widow at her own reputation’s funeral.

Camille Ward arrived ten minutes later.

She was elegant, older than Vanessa by twenty years, with silver-blonde hair and a face so still it looked carved. She did not look at the cameras. She did not need to.

Powerful people rarely rush.

Elena arrived through a side entrance with Detective Marlow. She wore a simple navy dress Karen Bell had helped her buy. The bandage was gone from her forehead, leaving a thin healing line above her brow.

When she saw the reporters, her steps faltered.

I moved beside her.

“You don’t have to look at them.”

She nodded, but her hands trembled.

Inside, Vanessa’s attorneys argued first.

They painted her as overwhelmed. A lonely wife abandoned for months. A caregiver drowning without support. They described my mother as confused, combative, prone to falls. They suggested Elena had manipulated an elderly woman for money and attention.

Every word felt like another blow.

Then Angela stood.

She did not shout.

She did not perform.

She simply played the truth.

Video one: Vanessa withholding medication.

Video two: Martin discussing forged signatures.

Video three: Vanessa planting cash in Elena’s room.

Video four: Derek breaking into my house to destroy the server.

By the time the fourth clip ended, the courtroom was silent.

Vanessa stared at the table.

Camille Ward watched without blinking.

Then Angela called Elena.

Elena walked to the stand as if walking through fire.

Vanessa finally looked up.

Their eyes met.

I saw Elena’s shoulders square.

Angela asked gentle questions first. Her name. Her employment. Her duties. My mother’s condition before I left. What changed after Vanessa ordered the visible cameras removed.

Elena answered clearly.

Then came the abuse.

Her voice shook once when she described finding Mom locked in her room without water. It shook again when she described hiding crackers in the sewing box. But she did not break.

Vanessa’s attorney rose for cross-examination with a smile sharp enough to cut glass.

“Miss Alvarez, you were paid by Mr. Rhodes, correct?”

“Yes.”

“And you lived in his home?”

“Yes.”

“And you had access to private rooms?”

“For cleaning and care, yes.”

“And you developed an emotional attachment to his mother?”

Elena paused. “I cared about her.”

“More than a normal employee should?”

Angela objected.

The judge allowed the question to be rephrased.

Vanessa’s attorney stepped closer. “Isn’t it true you saw Mrs. Rhodes as an obstacle?”

“No.”

“An obstacle between you and Mr. Rhodes?”

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

My face burned.

Elena looked directly at the attorney.

“No.”

He lifted the tablet.

“Isn’t it also true you were recorded saying, ‘Mr. Daniel will believe whatever I tell him’?”

Elena went pale, but her voice stayed steady.

“That video is false.”

“Convenient.”

“No,” Elena said. “Not convenient. False.”

The attorney smiled. “And we should simply take your word?”

Elena looked toward the judge.

“No. You should take the whole recording.”

The attorney’s smile disappeared.

Angela stood. “Your Honor, the defense has introduced an edited clip. We request permission to submit the original file recovered from Mr. Rhodes’s encrypted archive.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward her lawyers.

Camille Ward’s expression finally changed.

Just slightly.

The judge allowed it.

The full video played.

It showed Elena in the kitchen holding an envelope of cash—but not stealing it.

She had found it under my mother’s mattress after Vanessa hid it there. My mother sat behind her, frightened.

Elena said, “Mr. Daniel will believe whatever I tell him, Mrs. Rhodes said. But I don’t want him to believe me. I want him to see proof.”

The courtroom shifted.

The edited sentence had been carved out of a statement exposing Vanessa.

Angela turned to Vanessa’s attorney.

“Do you know who provided the edited clip?”

He looked trapped.

Vanessa whispered something to him.

Camille stood.

The judge’s eyes narrowed. “Ms. Ward, sit down.”

Camille did not.

She walked toward the aisle, phone in hand.

Detective Marlow moved first.

“Camille Ward,” he said, “you need to remain in the courtroom.”

She smiled faintly. “I don’t answer to small-town detectives.”

Marlow held up a document.

“No. But you do answer to the state attorney general’s office.”

Two agents entered from the back of the courtroom.

The room exploded in whispers.

Vanessa stood so fast her chair fell backward.

“Camille?”

For the first time, Vanessa sounded like a child.

Camille looked at her niece, and what I saw in her face was not love.

It was calculation.

Then Camille said the sentence that changed everything.

“I warned you not to use your own husband.”

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

May you like

Marlow smiled grimly.

“Thank you,” he said. “That was recorded.”
