Chapter 2: The Missing Prescription

Olivia's doctor had prescribed medication after her blood pressure began climbing dangerously two weeks earlier.
Ethan personally picked it up.
He left it in the kitchen cabinet beside the vitamins.
Now...
It was gone.
He searched every cabinet.
Every drawer.
Nothing.
He looked back at the family.
"Who touched it?"
Diane answered calmly.
"I threw it away."
The room froze.
"You WHAT?"
"It was making her lazy."
Vanessa nodded.
"Mom said pregnant women survived for thousands of years without pills."
Courtney added,
"Those medicines are probably bad for babies anyway."
Ethan could barely breathe.
"That prescription was keeping Olivia from developing preeclampsia."
Blank stares.
None of them even knew what the condition was.
His phone rang.
It was Olivia's doctor.
"Ethan... where is your wife?"
"Upstairs."
"Bring her to the emergency room immediately."
"Her latest symptoms are extremely concerning."
"If she misses several doses..."
"...both mother and baby could be in serious danger."
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
He looked at every face in the room.
"You didn't just throw away medicine."
"You gambled with two lives."

For the first time...
Fear appeared in Diane's eyes.
