Chapter 23 - THE NEW VOWS

We renewed our vows in a small glasshouse at the botanical garden.

Grace carried three flowers and dropped two before reaching us.

There were thirty guests.

No Legacy Circle.

No Vance company banners.

Maria, Antonio, Marcus, Helen, Dr. Ortiz, Camille, and Celeste attended.

Celeste asked whether her presence would hurt me.

I said:

“Your testimony mattered. Your laughter also mattered. Attendance does not erase either.”

She accepted a seat near the back.

Our vows contained no promise to become one person.

Sebastian said:

“I will not treat family access as harmless because conflict is uncomfortable. I will read what affects you before asking for trust. I will not wait for visible injury to believe quiet harm.”

I said:

“I will not make silence the price of belonging. I will tell you when safety changes, even when I fear the answer. I will keep ownership, motherhood, and marriage from becoming proof of one another.”

Grace interrupted.

“Can we have cake?”

Everyone laughed.

This time, the sound did not trap me.

After the ceremony, we ate at round tables.

Antonio served blackberry cake because I chose it.

I had avoided blackberries since the luncheon even though they had not been part of my abuse. Purple sauce resembled the stains beneath the table.

I tasted one bite.

Then another.

No one watched for bravery.

Sebastian and I purchased a new home together after a year of renewed marriage.

Smaller than the old estate.

No live-in relatives.

A guest room, not a permanent family wing.

Every smart-home administrator had an individual account.

Security restrictions required direct confirmation from the person affected.

The dining room held a round wooden table.

Grace liked hiding beneath it during games.

The first time she crawled under, my chest tightened.

She shouted:

“Mommy, come find me!”

I knelt.

Lifted the tablecloth.

She laughed and pulled me into her fort.

I sat beneath the table voluntarily.

There were cushions.

Books.

A flashlight.

No scraps.

No women above me.

Sebastian found us and asked permission before joining.

Grace said no because the fort was full.

He remained outside and passed us cookies.

An ordinary refusal.

No debt.

May you like

No threat.

No one lost shelter.
