CHAPTER 1 — THE PUSH

CHAPTER 1 — THE PUSH
The first sound was my daughter laughing.
The second was the splash.
For a heartbeat, my mind refused to accept what my eyes had already seen. Emily had been standing beside the hotel pool only a second earlier, wearing her favorite yellow dress, a white cardigan, and tiny silver shoes that sparkled every time she skipped across the patio.
Then she was gone.
The plastic cup of lemonade slipped from her hand, bounced across the concrete, and rolled toward the drain as ripples spread across the bright blue water.
She was only five.
The hotel courtyard smelled of sunscreen and chlorine. Families chatted beneath colorful umbrellas while soft music drifted from hidden speakers. Everything looked peaceful—until my sister smiled.
I knew that smile.
Vanessa had worn it my entire life.
She wore it before breaking my toys and blaming me. She wore it before humiliating me in front of classmates. She wore it every time she wanted to see how much pain someone could swallow without fighting back.
Our father always called her "spirited."
He called me "too sensitive."
That was the language of our family.
Cruelty became personality.
Pain became overreaction.
Even during lunch, Vanessa couldn't stop making comments about Emily.
"She's loud."
"Someone spoils her."
"Kids these days have no manners."
Each remark was followed by my father's amused chuckle.
Permission.
That was all Vanessa ever needed.
When lunch ended, Emily stood quietly beside me, carefully holding her lemonade with both hands.
She trusted every adult around her.
Children always do...
Until one teaches them not to.
Vanessa leaned closer.
She smiled.
Emily smiled back.
Then—
She shoved her.
Emily disappeared beneath the water without even having time to scream.
For one frozen second, nobody moved.
Not my mother.
Not my brother.
Not the strangers around the pool.
Everyone simply watched the bubbles rise.
I threw my purse aside and sprinted toward the edge.
"My baby!"
I barely reached the water before an iron grip slammed around the back of my neck.
I was yanked backward so violently that both knees smashed against the wet concrete.
Pain exploded through my legs.
"Dad! Let me go!"
His fingers tightened.
I could smell whiskey beneath the mint gum on his breath as he leaned close enough for me to hear every word.
"If she survives..."
He paused.
"...she survives."
I stared at him in horror.
Then he finished the sentence that shattered every excuse I had ever made for him.
"If she can't survive water..."
"...she doesn't deserve to live."

At that exact moment, Emily's tiny hand broke the surface of the pool.
Then disappeared beneath the water again.
