Chapter 10: The Blueprint of Redemption

Back in Rhinebeck, Arthur Pendelton entered the kitchen carrying a thick, navy-blue leather portfolio. He placed it squarely in front of Ethan.

"The Vanguard Housing Trust is breaking ground on its seventeenth urban dignity project in the Bronx next week," Arthur explained. "We need a field project manager. Someone who isn't afraid to get dirty, someone who understands the value of every single brick laid."

Ethan stared at the blueprints, then looked up at me in disbelief. "Mom... you want me to run this? I'm just an assistant supervisor in Brooklyn."

"You've spent nine months carrying a toolbelt and working alongside the men who build this city," I said, a proud smile warming my face. "You know how to speak their language. You know the value of honest sweat. I am not handing you a corporate throne to sit in an air-conditioned office. I am giving you a chance to build homes for people who have nothing."

Ethan turned the page of the blueprint. A spark ignited in his eyes—a vibrant, clean ambition I had never seen back when he was draped in unearned luxury.

"I'll take the job," Ethan said firmly. "But on one condition: I want the standard field manager's salary. No bonuses, no corporate perks. I keep my walk-up in Brooklyn. I want to earn every single dollar."

Arthur offered a rare, approving nod. The boy had finally become a man.
