Chapter 1 - THE BASIN ON THE MARBLE

My mother’s bare foot rested on my pregnant wife’s shoulder.
Elena knelt on the marble foyer floor, both hands submerged in a silver basin while tears ran down her face. At eight months pregnant, she could barely lean forward without struggling to breathe. Her pale maternity dress was wet from the knees down.
“Scrub harder,” Vivian said, twisting a fistful of Elena’s hair. “This house belongs to my children, not you.”
I had returned to Greenwich from Singapore two days early. My mother expected me on Friday. It was Wednesday morning, and I still carried the breakfast bag I had bought for Elena at the airport.
The bag slipped from my hand.
Vivian looked toward the front door without releasing Elena.
“Daniel. You’re home.”
My younger brother, Lucas, stood halfway up the staircase with his phone raised. He had been filming.
He lowered it slowly. “Mom was teaching her some respect.”
Elena looked at me, but relief did not reach her face. She looked frightened that I had seen too much.
That was how I knew this was not the first time.
I crossed the foyer, lifted Vivian’s foot from Elena’s shoulder and pulled my wife carefully upright.
“Pack a bag,” I said.
Vivian laughed. “For her?”
“For both of us.”
“You own nothing without me, Daniel. The company, this house, every door that opened for you came from your father.”
I put one arm around Elena’s waist.
“Then you can keep the doors.”
Upstairs, Elena changed while I called her obstetrician. She had mild contractions and bruising around one wrist, but the baby was moving. The doctor told us to go directly to Greenwich Hospital for evaluation.
Before we left, I opened the locked drawer in my study.
For six months, money had been disappearing from the reserve account Elena and I used for taxes, medical expenses and the house we planned to buy after the baby came. The transfers were disguised as payments to Lark Consulting, Northbridge Interiors and Meridian Wellness.
Total missing: $684,000.
I had assumed Elena was paying contractors for the nursery renovation Vivian insisted on managing. Elena assumed I was covering business expenses while traveling.
One statement showed Northbridge sending the money into Vivian’s personal account.
Another contained Lucas’s authorization.
Vivian appeared in the doorway.
“Elena has been careless,” she said. “Pregnancy has made her emotional.”
I placed the statements on the foyer table.
“Then explain why our money kept landing in your account.”

Her smile disappeared.
Elena touched the first transfer and whispered, “Daniel, I authorized that one.”
