Chapter 7 - The Fracture

The silence in the room was absolute. I could hear the waves crashing outside, keeping their eternal rhythm.

Megan's mouth opened, but no sound came out. The absolute shock of losing her prized, calculated inheritance broke something inside her. The mask slipped completely.

"You... you gave away a two-million-dollar property to a charity?" she whispered, her voice trembling with a rage so profound it bordered on madness. "You stole from us! You stole from your own son!"

"I didn't steal anything," I said firmly. "I protected what Henry and I built. I protected my peace."

She turned on Robert, hitting him hard in the chest with the flat of her hand. "Do something! Call a lawyer! She's out of her mind, we can prove she's not mentally fit!"

But Robert didn't look at me with anger. He looked at his wife. He looked at the woman he had married, seeing her for the very first time. He saw the greed contorting her face. He saw the utter lack of love or respect for the family he came from.

"Stop it, Megan," Robert said, his voice remarkably steady.

"Don't tell me to stop! She just ruined our entire financial plan!"

"It was her house!" Robert yelled, the sudden volume making Megan flinch backward. He ran a hand over his face, tears finally brimming in his eyes. He looked at the face-down picture of his father. He looked at the mud tracked over the floors his father had laid by hand.

"It was never ours," Robert whispered, sounding like the eight-year-old boy who used to run down the halls. "It was hers. And you... you just couldn't let her have it."

"Robert..." Megan started, realizing she had pushed too far.

"Go to the car, Megan," he said, his voice dead and hollow. "Pack your bags and get in the car. We are leaving."

She tried to argue, but the look in his eyes stopped her. Without another word to me, she grabbed her designer purse, spun on her heel, and marched out the front door, letting the screen door slam loudly behind her.

Robert stood alone in the living room with me. He looked at the floor, unable to meet my eyes.

"Mom... I am so sorry," he wept quietly. "I lost sight of... everything. I let her take over. I let her treat you like a guest in your own life."

I walked over and gently placed my hand on his cheek. "You have a lot of thinking to do, Robbie. About the life you are building, and who you are building it with."

"I know," he choked out.

"Go," I told him gently. "I have a house to clean."
