IVY'S QUESTION

Almost a year later, Ivy stood on the stage at her elementary school.

She was reading an essay about courage.

She did not mention the ballroom.

She did not mention the belt.

She never once used the word abuse.

Instead she smiled at the audience and read one sentence that made me cry before she reached the end.

"Being brave isn't when nobody hurts you."

"It's when someone finally says, 'This stops with me.'"

After the ceremony, her teacher handed me a folded drawing.

It showed three people holding hands.

Me.

Marcus.

Ivy.

There were no grandparents.

No mansion.

No ballroom.

Just a small house under a bright blue sky.

At the top, she had written,

"This is my real family."

That night, I unlocked the cedar box one last time.

I added one photograph.

It was taken after Ivy's school ceremony.

On the back I wrote the words my grandmother had never been able to write herself.

"The cycle ended here."

Then I closed the lid.

Not to hide the past.

But because, for the first time in generations...

No child in the Crawford family would ever need those journals again.
