Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

Six months later, spring had finally arrived in Lake Forest. The heavy snow had melted, giving way to bright green lawns and vibrant pink roses blooming along the stone garden paths.
The Moretti estate was no longer quiet.
The heavy, stifling silence that had governed the thirty-two-room mansion for decades was gone, replaced by the sound of light laughter and small, fast footsteps echoing down the marble hallways.
In the sunroom overlooking Lake Michigan, Emily Bennett sat at a white wrought-iron table, going over the estate's new staff ledger. She wore a simple pale blue dress instead of the gray uniform. Her wrist had healed completely, though a tiny, silver scar remained above her eyebrow—a quiet reminder of the night her life had changed.
"Mommy! Look!"
Lucy came sprinting through the open French doors, her sunhat dangling around her neck, holding a bright yellow dandelion high in the air. Close behind her, walking with a relaxed, unhurried stride, was Adrian Moretti.
He was wearing a casual gray sweater, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, devoid of the stiff armor of his tailored suits.
"Lucy, don't run on the tile," Emily warned softly, though a warm smile touched her lips.
"Mr. Adrian helped me find the biggest flower in the garden!" Lucy announced proudly, marching up to the table and presenting the dandelion to her mother.
"It's beautiful, sweetheart," Emily said, taking the flower and tucking it into her notebook. She looked up at Adrian, her gray eyes filled with quiet gratitude. "You shouldn't let her disturb your afternoon, Adrian. I know you have meetings with the shipping directors."
"The directors can wait," Adrian said smoothly, leaning down to pull out a chair beside her. "Besides, Lucy informed me that supervising the rose gardens was top priority today."
Lucy giggled, climbing onto Adrian's lap without an ounce of hesitation. She rested her head against his chest, entirely comfortable in the presence of the man the rest of Chicago still feared. Adrian placed a protective hand over the child's back, his thumb rubbing small, soothing circles against her shoulder.
Emily watched them, still occasionally stunned by how dramatically their world had transformed. After the Carlisle arrest, Adrian had officially appointed Emily as the estate’s head manager, granting her full authority over the property and a generous salary that ensured she and Lucy would never face poverty again. But more than security, he had given them a true home.
"Michael said the court finalized the Carlisle liquidations this morning," Emily said quietly, looking out over the blue expanse of the lake.
"It's over," Adrian replied. "All of it. The estate is clean. The business is clean."
He reached across the small table, his hand resting over Emily's. She didn't pull away.
"Three months ago, I thought my life was meant to be lived in dark corridors and cold rooms," Adrian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with profound warmth. "I thought promises were just tools to control people. But a little girl knocked on my door in the middle of the night and proved me wrong."
Lucy looked up between them, her gray eyes sparkling. "Are we staying here forever, Mommy?"
May you like
Emily looked at Adrian, seeing the sincerity, strength, and quiet devotion in his eyes. The shadow of the mafia boss had faded, leaving behind a man who had chosen to protect what mattered most.
"Yes, Lucy," Emily whispered, squeezing Adrian's hand. "We're staying right here."
