The surgery lasted nearly four hours.
Marcus remained outside the operating room the entire time.
He ignored every phone call.
Every board meeting.
Every investor.
None of it mattered.
When Damian finally emerged, exhaustion lined his face.
"The baby survived."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"And Evelyn?"
"She'll recover."
The relief nearly dropped him to his knees.
"But..."
Damian's expression hardened.
"She asked for you."
Inside the recovery room, Evelyn looked impossibly fragile.
Machines hummed softly around her.
Marcus approached.
"I'm sorry."
She watched him quietly.
"I should have believed you."
Another silence.
Then Evelyn spoke.
"You didn't just fail to believe me."
"You chose someone else's version of me."
Each word landed heavier than any accusation.
Marcus lowered his head.
"I know."
"I'll spend the rest of my life making this right."
She gave a tired smile.
"No."
He looked up.
"My child deserves peace."
"I deserve peace."
"But neither of us can find it beside someone who doubted us so easily."
She slipped her wedding ring from her finger.
Placed it gently in his hand.
"Our marriage ended long before tonight."
"This was simply the night we admitted it."
