Chapter 24 - THE SECRET UNDER THE SCHOOL

By morning, Monica Shaw was in surgery under armed guard.
She survived.
Samuel did not.
Federal investigators flooded Connecticut.
This time, Daniel bypassed compromised offices and contacted a special prosecutor directly.
Meanwhile, Elise obtained an emergency order to excavate beneath the children’s wing.
Workers discovered an old underground utility room beneath the foundation.
Inside stood a rusted metal cabinet.
Michael Bennett had placed it there seventeen years earlier.
Long before the school existed.
Inside were cassette tapes.
Documents.
And one sealed medical file.
Elise opened it.
The name on the front was not June.
It was ELISE BENNETT.
She frowned.
Inside were hospital records from her own birth.
Blood tests.
Genetic reports.
A handwritten letter from Sarah.
Elise read slowly.
Michael,
If something happens to me, Elise must eventually know.
Monica has become dangerous because she believes the Vale inheritance belongs to her.
It does not.
Our mother had another daughter before Monica and me.
That daughter was adopted.
Years later, she had a son.
That son was Jonathan Marlowe’s father.
Elise stopped.
Rebecca took the letter.
Her mouth fell open.
“Elise…”
Sarah continued.
The Marlowes and Vales are connected through a hidden maternal line.
The controlling trust does not legally belong to Helena.
Its succession clause passes to the oldest surviving descendant of Eleanor Vale.
That descendant is Elise.
The room went silent.
Elise laughed once.
“That’s impossible.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
She understood corporate trusts better than Elise.
“If this is authentic, Helena never legally controlled those shares.”
Daniel asked, “Who does?”
Rebecca stared at Elise.
“She does.”
Elise stepped backward.
“No.”
“And because June is your daughter—”
“No.”
June looked confused.
“What?”
Rebecca crouched.
“It means your mom owns controlling rights that everyone thought belonged to Helena.”
June shrugged.
“Okay.”
Adults stared at her.
“What?”
June said, “Can we still keep the music school?”
Elise suddenly laughed.
Then cried.
That was June.
Billions could shift across family trusts and she wanted to know whether children could keep playing piano.
But another document remained.
A DNA report.
Elise opened it.
Jonathan had run genetic testing shortly before his death.
Not because he suspected anything about June.
Because he discovered the hidden family line.
His handwritten note read:
If this is correct, Elise owns 64% of consolidated Marlowe-Vale assets through dormant trust rights.
Estimated current valuation: $1.8 billion.
Elise dropped the paper.
Rebecca whispered, “Helena tried to destroy you because you were the real heir.”
Daniel shook his head.
“And Monica?”
Elise looked at Sarah’s letter.
“She thought she was.”
All those deaths.
All those lies.
All that violence.
For control of an inheritance that had never belonged to either woman.
Then a federal agent entered.
“Mrs. Marlowe?”
“Yes?”
“We searched Monica Shaw’s residence.”
“And?”
“We found evidence connected to your husband’s death.”
Elise closed her eyes.
The agent continued.
“But that isn’t the biggest discovery.”
“What is?”
“We found a recent photograph.”
He placed it on the table.
A man walking through a European train station.
The timestamp was six months old.
Elise stared.
The man looked older.
Bearded.
Thin.
But she recognized the eyes immediately.
June saw the photograph.
Her face went white.
“Daddy?”
Elise could not breathe.
May you like
Jonathan Marlowe.
Alive.
