Chapter 9 - AN ANGEL IN THE ALLEY

Just as the shelter manager began to reach for Barnaby’s leash, a calm, steady voice interrupted from the entrance gate.
"Excuse me."
A woman named Sarah, wearing a warm wool coat, stepped into the yard. She had been visiting the shelter to donate blankets, but she had stopped when she recognized the two boys. For the past two days, she had seen them searching the neighborhood, asking everyone they met about their lost dog. She had been deeply moved by their devotion.
"I’ve been watching these boys," Sarah said, walking over to stand beside Ben and Toby. She placed a gentle, reassuring hand on Ben’s shoulder. "They have walked miles across this city, through the cold and the rain, just to find their friend."
"That doesn't change the fact that they are homeless," the wealthy man argued, crossing his arms. "The dog belongs with someone who can provide for him."
Sarah looked at the wealthy man, then down at Barnaby. The dog was completely ignoring the rich man. Instead, he was whimpering, pressing his entire body against the fence, desperately trying to get closer to Toby, his front paws reaching through the wire to touch the little boy’s hands.
"A dog doesn't care about a wealthy home or a white picket fence, sir," Sarah said softly but firmly to the shelter manager. "A dog knows exactly who loves him. Look at him. That is his family."
The manager looked at Barnaby, then at the wealthy man, who scoffed and turned away, realizing he had lost the moral high ground.
Sarah turned to the manager and pulled a credit card from her purse. "I will pay all the adoption fees, the medical check-up, and the licensing for Barnaby. And I will take full legal responsibility for him."

Toby looked up at Sarah, his eyes wide with wonder. "You... you’re letting us keep him?"
Sarah knelt down to Toby’s eye level, wiping a tear from his cheek with her thumb. "I’m not just letting you keep him, sweetie. I think it’s time you all got some rest."
