Chapter 10 - The Compass of the Heart

Three years later, the war was a quiet, receding memory.

A small, white-painted cottage stood on a sunny hill in Ohio, surrounded by towering oak trees and a wooden fence. In the front yard, a beautiful garden of wild daisies and rosemary was in full bloom, their sweet scent carrying on the summer breeze.

Thomas sat on the porch rocking chair, holding a cup of warm coffee. He walked with a slight cane, but his face was healthy, his eyes clear and peaceful.

"Watch this, Dad!"

Thomas looked up, a wide, proud smile spreading across his face.

Liam, now ten years old, was running through the grass, kicking a soccer ball with incredible skill. He was taller, his skin tanned and healthy, but his eyes still held that same spark of life that Thomas had found in the dust of Oakhaven.

On the wooden table next to Thomas's chair sat the small, headless wooden horse—now carefully repaired with a new, hand-carved head made of polished pine.

Liam ran up the steps, grabbing the canteen of water from the table and taking a large drink. He wiped his mouth, looking at Thomas with a grin. "Did you see that shot?"

"I did, buddy," Thomas smiled, pulling him close for a one-armed hug. "You're getting too fast for me."

"That’s because you taught me how to run, Dad," Liam said softly, his hand resting on Thomas's shoulder.

Thomas looked out at the peaceful valley, the green hills stretching as far as the eye could see. The road had been long, dangerous, and filled with shadows, but they had walked it together, guided not by military maps or orders, but by the quiet, unshakable compass of the heart.

And in that quiet, sunny yard, the harvest of their journey was finally complete.
