Chapter 10 - The Wine of Tomorrow
The morning after the wedding brought a quiet, clean light over the valley of Monterosso.
Sienna and Leo stood on the hill overlooking their vineyards, their fingers tangled together as they watched the morning mist rise from the valley floor. The sun was warm, painting the green vine leaves in shades of bright emerald and gold.
Sienna wore her linen dress, her hair down, free of the lace veil but still carrying the faint scent of wild rosemary and lavender from her bouquet.
"We have a lot of work to do, Sienna," Leo said softly, his eyes tracing the long terraces of grapes that stretched down the hillside. "The harvest is in three weeks. It will be a busy season."
"I’m ready," Sienna smiled, looking at him. "I want to learn everything. I want to know the vines, the soil, and the secrets of the wine."
Leo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, green glass bottle. Inside was a clear, pale liquid.
"What is that?" Sienna asked.
"This is the Lacryma Christi—the first press of the white grapes from the vintage of the year we were born," Leo said, his voice soft with reverence. "My father kept it in the deepest corner of the cellar, waiting for the day I married. We are supposed to pour a few drops onto the roots of our oldest vine, to promise the earth that we will keep tending it."
They walked down to the oldest grapevine in the corner of the terrace—a massive, twisted trunk of dark wood that had grown deep into the dry limestone wall, its roots reaching down to the very heart of the mountain.
Together, they knelt in the red soil. Leo opened the small bottle, and they each held it, pouring the golden liquid onto the dry earth at the base of the ancient vine.
The rich, sweet scent of old grapes and oak wood rose from the soil as the dry earth drank the offering.
"To our tomorrow," Sienna whispered, her hand resting on the warm, twisted wood of the vine.
May you like
"To our home," Leo replied, pulling her into a gentle, lingering kiss that tasted of the clean mountain air and the sweet promise of the future.
Behind them, the church bells of Monterosso began to ring for the morning mass, their clear, resonant tones carrying over the quiet hills, a timeless song of peace, connection, and a love that, having found its true home, would never fade.
