Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Horizon

The morning sun rose over the eastern hills, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of deep violet, amber, and brilliant gold. The first light of dawn flooded through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of Maya’s coastal residence, casting a warm, radiant glow across the light oak floors, the minimalist artwork, and the quiet, orderly nursery where her son slept peacefully in his crib.

Maya stood by the wide window, watching her son’s steady, rhythmic breathing. The echoes of the ballroom attack, the shattering glass, the cold iron rod, and the venomous screams of her mother were all distant memories, reduced to their proper place in history: lessons learned, trials survived, and justice delivered to its absolute limit.

She stepped out onto the balcony, taking a deep, refreshing breath of the crisp morning air, filling her lungs with the sweet scent of sea salt and earth, feeling the steady, powerful pulse of her own heartbeat. There were no monsters hiding in the dark corners of her home, no cruel whispers echoing through the hallways, no masters demanding obedience, and no fraudulent ledgers waiting to be hidden.

From the hallway, Lena stepped into the nursery, holding a fresh batch of municipal audit reports and smiling brightly.

"Morning, Director Vance. The press conference is set for ten o'clock downtown. The attorney general wants you to deliver the keynote address on asset recovery standards."

Maya turned around, a brilliant, serene smile illuminating her face in the morning light. "Tell him I'll be there in twenty minutes, Lena. Just finishing my morning audit."
