Chapter 4: The House of Secrets

The aftermath was a hurricane. Julian, reeling from the betrayal of the woman he had loved for ten years, retreated into his study, refusing to see anyone.
Elena didn't leave. She stayed, not as a maid, but as the only person who knew the truth of what had happened. She knew where the documents were, where the digital trails led, and how deep the corruption went.
She spent the next week working alongside the authorities. It turned out Victoria hadn't been working alone. She had partners within the company, people who had been feeding her information to sabotage Julian from the inside.
One evening, Julian emerged from his office. He looked aged, tired, but his eyes were sharp. He found Elena in the library, organizing the final files for the investigators.
"You knew," he said, standing in the doorway. "For how long?"
"Six months, sir," Elena answered, not looking up. "I saw the signs. The erratic spending, the secret calls. I tried to warn you, but you weren't ready to listen."
Julian walked over and sat down. For the first time, he didn't look like a billionaire; he looked like a man who had lost everything and was slowly putting the pieces back together. "Why did you do it? You could have just walked away. You could have saved yourself and let me... let me take the fall."

Elena closed the folder. "Because, Mr. Sterling, you once gave my brother a job when no one else would. You gave my family a chance when we had nothing. I don't forget kindness. Even when the person receiving it has forgotten how to be kind."
Julian looked down at his hands. "I have a lot to make up for."
