Chapter 8 - THE GOLDEN CHILD CRACKS

The air inside the secure attorney-client consultation wing of the Westchester County Courthouse was thick with the scent of cheap coffee and mounting desperation. Heavy steel mesh reinforced the glass windows, casting grid-like shadows across the long metal table.
Following the conflict of interest revealed by the Amazon Echo recording, Harrison Drake had officially dropped Linda and Richard as clients, choosing to represent only Erica—whose frozen, shady LLC funds still held enough liquid cash to pay his exorbitant retainer. My parents had been assigned a weary, overworked public defender named Marcus Vance (no relation to us), who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world.
For the first time since their arrest, the three co-conspirators were brought together for a joint defense conference.
Erica sat at the far end of the table, her orange jumpsuit looking violently bright against her pale skin. Her fingernails, once perfectly manicured, were bitten down to the quick. She was tapping her foot in a frantic, erratic rhythm. Beside her sat Linda and Richard, but the suffocating warmth they usually showered her with was entirely gone. They sat as far away from her as the small room allowed.
"Let’s get straight to the point," Marcus, the public defender, said, throwing a heavy stack of papers onto the metal table. "The District Attorney is not playing games. The audio recording is legally airtight. The forensic UV photos prove cleanup and spoliation of evidence. Richard, Linda—the DA is offering you a deal. If you plead guilty to obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact, and if you provide full, sworn testimony against Erica regarding the initial assault, they will recommend a suspended sentence. No jail time. Probation only."
Erica’s foot stopped tapping. Her head snapped up, her eyes widening in absolute shock. "What? No. Drake, tell them they can't do that!"
Harrison Drake sighed, rubbing his temples. "Erica, be quiet. Marcus, what about my client?"
"For Erica, the DA is insisting on the maximum," Marcus replied coldly, not even looking at her. "First-degree felony assault, reckless endangerment of an unborn child, grand larceny, and multiple counts of identity theft for the financial fraud against her parents. They are looking at fifteen to twenty years in a maximum-security state facility."
"Daddy!" Erica shrieked, lunging across the table toward Richard. "Tell him he’s lying! You wouldn't do that to me! I'm your little girl! You promised you would always protect me!"
Richard didn't look at her. He kept his eyes fixed on the metal table, his jaw clenched so tight the bones in his face looked sharp. "The bank called me yesterday, Erica," he said, his voice trembling with a quiet, hollow rage. "They are foreclosing on the house. The house my father built. The house we raised you in. You stole four hundred thousand dollars from us. You left us destitute. You let us take the blame for your psycho behavior while you were driving a Porsche in Manhattan."
"I did it for us!" Erica lied frantically, tears streaming down her face. "I was going to buy us a bigger house! I was going to take care of you!"
"You took care of yourself!" Linda screamed, suddenly exploding. She slammed her hands onto the table, leaning across to glare at her favorite daughter with a hatred that had been brewing for two weeks. "We lied for you! We risked prison for you! We let our other daughter bleed on the floor for you! And all the while, you were robbing us blind! You are a monster, Erica! A selfish, parasitic monster!"
Erica shrank back into her chair, her face contorting into something hideous. The fragile, innocent act she had played for twenty-six years cracked, peeling away to reveal the raw, unhinged narcissism beneath.
"You think you’re better than me?" Erica spat, her voice suddenly dropping into a harsh, guttural register. "You’re the ones who spoiled me! You’re the ones who told me Sarah was nothing! You made me this way! If I’m going to prison, I’m taking you both down with me. I’ll tell the jury you helped me plan it. I’ll tell them you told me to kick her!"
"That's enough!" Harrison Drake shouted, standing up and throwing his hands in the air. "This consultation is over."
Three days later, against all legal odds, Erica was released on a temporary, highly restricted bail. Her defense team had managed to convince a lenient judge to release her under house arrest with an ankle monitor, using her Manhattan high-rise lease—which hadn't been fully seized yet—as collateral.
But Erica had no intention of staying in that apartment. The walls of her golden cage were closing in, and in her fractured mind, there was only one person responsible for her ruin.
Sarah.
I was staying at a secure, private step-down rehabilitation clinic upstate, a beautiful, quiet facility surrounded by woods where the doctors could monitor my pregnancy in absolute peace. Michael had paid for private security, but on a quiet Sunday afternoon, the guard on duty had stepped away to assist a nurse with an emergency in the neighboring wing.
I was sitting on a bench in the clinic’s private courtyard, feeling the warm summer breeze on my face, when a shadow fell over me.
I looked up. My heart stopped.
Erica stood there. She was wearing a heavy trench coat to hide her ankle monitor, her hair wild, her eyes bloodshot and completely manic. She held a heavy, solid brass garden shears she had stolen from the landscaping cart outside.
"Erica," I whispered, my hand instantly flying to my stomach. "How did you get in here?"
"You think you won, don't you, Sarah?" Erica whispered, stepping closer, the metal shears glinting in the sunlight. "You always wanted my life. You wanted my parents. You wanted the spotlight. And now you have your perfect husband, your perfect baby, and I'm going to rot in a cell."
"I never wanted your life, Erica," I said, trying to keep my voice steady as I slowly slid my hand toward the emergency call button on my wristband. "I just wanted to be safe from you."
"You ruined me!" she shrieked, lunging forward with the heavy metal shears raised. "I'm going to make sure you never get to be a mother!"
Before she could reach me, a heavy, powerful force tackled her from the side, sending her crashing onto the stone pavers.
It was Michael.
He had just arrived to visit me, walking into the courtyard just in time to see her raise the weapon. He pinned Erica to the ground, his face dark with a primal, protective rage as he wrenched the heavy shears from her grip.
"Get off me!" Erica screamed, thrashing wildly like a trapped animal. "I'll kill her! I'll kill both of them!"
Two facility security guards and three state police officers came rushing into the courtyard, their guns drawn. They quickly pulled Michael back and slammed Erica onto her stomach, clicking the heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
Officer Davis, the investigator from the hospital, walked up to us, his face pale as he looked at the wild, unhinged woman screaming obscenities on the floor.
"Erica Vance, your bail is officially revoked," Davis announced. "You're going back to Rikers. And this time, there won't be any bail."
May you like
As they dragged her away, her wild screams echoing through the quiet valley, Michael pulled me tightly into his arms. I buried my face in his neck, sobbing with a mixture of terror and profound relief.
She had tried to destroy us one last time, but in doing so, she had sealed her own fate. There would be no plea deals. There would be no mercy. The final trial was about to begin.
