Chapter 2: The Hero at the Threshold

Barnaby let out a sharp, defensive bark, his golden tail dropping between his legs as he stood over his injured owner, his intelligent eyes wide with distress.

"Barnaby... stay..." Arthur wheezed from the floor, clutching his bruised ribs, completely disoriented by the sudden outbreak of toxic greed inside the quiet clinic.

Evelyn didn't waste a single second looking down at the injured senior citizen. With an expression of pure, triumphant arrogance, she grabbed Barnaby by his thick leather harness, pulling him toward the exit. She assumed that with the old man incapacitated, she could easily slip out of the clinic, throw the animal into the back of her luxury sedan, and disappear into the grid of the city before anyone realized what was actually happening.

But she had completely underestimated the structural integrity of the clinic's staff.

From behind the heavy oak laboratory door stepped Dr. David Evans, the head veterinarian and co-owner of the practice. Dr. Evans was a thirty-six-year-old former military officer who had served two tours of duty as a specialized veterinary supervisor for tactical K-9 units before returning to private civilian practice. He possessed a calm, analytical mind, a powerful six-foot-two frame, and an absolute, unyielding devotion to the welfare of animals and their rightful owners.

Dr. Evans had heard the chaotic shouting and the heavy thud of the collapsing display from the examination room. The moment he stepped into the lobby and assessed the tactical layout of the room—Arthur groaning on the floor beneath the heavy bags, and a strange, manicured woman forcefully dragging a distressed dog toward the exit—his military reflexes took complete control of his actions.

"Hey! Drop the leash and step away from the dog right now!" Dr. Evans commanded, his voice booming through the modern lobby with the absolute authority of a drill instructor.

Evelyn froze for a microsecond, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, trapped intensity. Instead of complying, she pulled Barnaby even harder, her designer boots skidding against the floor as she neared the glass exit doors. "Mind your own business, doctor! This is my dog! This old man stole him from my estate this morning! I am simply retrieving my property, and if you try to stop me, I will sue this entire clinic into bankruptcy!"

"That is an absolute lie!" Arthur managed to shout from the floor, his voice trembling with emotion. "I’ve raised Barnaby since he was an eight-week-old puppy! Dr. Evans has been his veterinarian his entire life!"

Evelyn’s face turned an ugly shade of dark crimson as her narrative instantly disintegrated. Blinded by a chaotic mixture of panic and malice, she dropped her purse onto the floor and began frantically grabbing at Barnaby’s neck, her long fingernails digging deeply into the animal's skin as she tried to detach the thick, decorative red collar he was wearing. She wasn't trying to steal the dog for its emotional value; she was desperately trying to destroy the evidence before anyone could inspect the animal's hardware.

Dr. Evans crossed the polished lobby floor with explosive speed. Before Evelyn could detach the clasp of the collar, his large, powerful hand clamped around her wrist like a steel vice, firmly but safely pulling her completely away from the golden retriever.

"I said, step back!" Dr. Evans barked, using his physical leverage to position himself directly between Evelyn and the frightened animal. He looked toward the receptionist behind the safety glass, his eyes completely calm but intensely focused. "Sarah! Call the police immediately. Tell them we have an active case of assault, attempted grand theft, and a suspect refusing to leave the perimeter. She’s not leaving this building."
