Chapter 5 - The Oracle of the Deep

The impact with the freezing water felt like hitting concrete. It knocked the air from Aiden's lungs, and the darkness of the ocean swallowed them whole. The current was a roaring monster, twisting him, pulling him down into the black abyss. He clawed his way toward where he thought the surface was, but his winter coat was soaking wet, dragging him down. His vision began to blur.

I'm not going to make it, he thought.

Just as his grip on Pearl began to slip, he felt a pull.

Pearl was swimming in front of him, her tiny silver tail beating with incredible power. She wasn't a helpless baby anymore; in the water, she was a streak of pure, luminous speed. She grabbed his sleeve with her tiny hand, her strength defying her size, and dragged him through the dark water away from the drone's searching lights.

She pulled him deep into a submerged fissure in the cliffside, navigating a labyrinth of underwater tunnels before breaking the surface inside a massive, hidden cavern.

Aiden collapsed onto a flat stone ledge, coughing up seawater, his chest burning. "God... thank you, Pearl."

Pearl dragged herself out of the water, sitting on the ledge next to him. She immediately crossed her arms, wrinkled her nose, and glared at him, letting out a sharp huff as if to say, What took you so long?

"Well, well. The survivor of the storm and the child of the deep," a raspy, ancient voice echoed through the cavern.

Aiden spun around, instantly pulling Pearl behind his back.

Emerging from the deep pool in the center of the cavern was a creature of myth. Her upper body was that of an ancient, weathered woman, but her skin was gray and covered in barnacles, and her lower body was a mass of dark, twisting octopus tentacles. Her eyes were milky white, yet she looked directly at Pearl.

"Who are you?" Aiden demanded, his voice echoing off the damp cave walls. "What is this place?"

"I am Neri, the keeper of the deep secrets," the creature said, her voice like grinding stones. She looked at Pearl, who was glaring at her with her signature pout. "Do not let her cute, angry face fool you, human. She is not a simple mermaid of the reef. She is the Ocean's Grudge."

"The Ocean's Grudge?" Aiden repeated, looking back at the tiny toddler.

"Born from the collective pain of the seas," Neri explained, her tentacles shifting slowly. "Every oil spill, every plastic net, every drop of poison humans pour into our waters—the sea remembers. It bleeds, and it hates. She was created to be the ultimate weapon of cleansing. Her anger is the sea's anger. If she reaches her full power while holding that hatred, she will summon a tide that will wash your entire civilization into the abyss."
