Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

Heavy steel doors slid shut around the courtyard, trapping them on the deck. Armed security guards flooded the area, their red laser sights bouncing off Aiden's chest.
Dr. Vance walked out of the glass dome, flanked by two guards carrying heavy, pressurized titanium containment tanks.
"Hand over the specimen, Aiden," Vance commanded, his voice cold. "The genetic material in her tail can cure diseases, prolong human life by centuries, and make my company billions. She is a resource, nothing more. You're fighting for a fish."
"She is a child!" Aiden shouted, stepping in front of Pearl, shielding her from the weapons. "She has a name! Her name is Pearl!"
"She is a weapon of mass destruction, you fool," Vance spat. "Look at her."
Pearl let out a fierce, vibrating shriek. The water in the surrounding bay began to boil and churn. Massive waves began to rise, battering the concrete foundations of the estate. The sky turned a terrifying shade of bruised purple as thunder cracked directly overhead, shaking the very ground beneath their feet.
"She is reacting to the stress," Vance muttered, his eyes wide with a mix of fear and greed. "Subdue them! Now!"
A guard lunged forward, striking Aiden in the ribs with an electric stun baton. The brutal shock ripped through Aiden's body, sending him collapsing to his knees, gasping for air as his muscles seized.
"Aiden!" Pearl squeaked, her voice suddenly sounding incredibly human.
Seeing Aiden hurt, Pearl’s eyes turned completely black. Her soft white hair began to float as if she were underwater, and a dark, destructive red aura erupted from her tiny body. The glass walls of the mansion began to crack under the sheer sonic pressure of her rage.
"Pearl, stop!" Aiden screamed, fighting through the paralyzing pain. He crawled toward her, ignoring the guards, ignoring the weapons. He threw his arms around her tiny, radiating body, holding her close. "If you do this... the hatred wins. Don't let them make you a monster. I'm here. I've got you. I love you, Pearl."
The dark red aura flickered. Pearl looked at Aiden, his face contorted in pain but his eyes filled with pure, unconditional love.

The blackness in her eyes receded, replaced by her deep, oceanic blue. The storm in her chest quieted, and she let out a soft, tired whimper, collapsing against his shoulder.
"The stone..." she whispered.
