The room held its breath.
Evelyn switched on the small cast cutter.
The familiar vibration filled the hospital room.
Marissa took one step forward.
"Don't you dare."
Daniel raised a hand.
"Let her."
Slowly, carefully, Evelyn guided the blade through the plaster.
The cast opened with a soft crack.
A sour smell escaped immediately.
Every nurse frowned.
Then...
Something moved.
A dark shape wriggled out from between the layers of padding.
One nurse screamed.
A large centipede dropped onto the hospital blanket, its dozens of legs twisting wildly as it searched for somewhere to hide.
Noah cried out and pulled his arm away.
Another insect followed.
Then another.
The room erupted into chaos.
The nurses quickly trapped the insects inside a specimen container.
Daniel stared in horror.
"What..."
"...what is this?"
Evelyn gently removed the remaining bandages.
Noah's forearm was covered with bite marks, swollen welts, and infected scratches.
