Chapter 3: The Woman Who Smiled
Daniel slowly turned toward Marissa.
Her face had become completely pale.
"You knew."
She shook her head frantically.
"No!"
"I have no idea how those got in there!"
Evelyn quietly picked up the inside padding of the cast.
Hidden beneath the cotton lining was a small plastic capsule.
It had been carefully cut open from the inside.
"This wasn't an accident," Evelyn said.
"The insects were placed inside after the cast was applied."
The attending physician frowned.
"That would require someone accessing the cast at home."
Daniel's voice became frighteningly calm.
"Who was alone with Noah?"
Silence.
Only one person had stayed home with him every afternoon.
Marissa.
"No..."
she whispered.
"You can't prove anything."
Evelyn looked at the security camera installed in Noah's hospital room.
"No."
"But your own actions might."
The hospital released surveillance footage from the previous evening.
Marissa had repeatedly insisted that no nurse check Noah's cast.
She had even argued when Noah begged for help.
Meanwhile, Daniel ordered the home's security recordings to be reviewed.
Hours later, another video appeared.
It showed Marissa entering Noah's bedroom carrying a small plastic container.
She emerged minutes later without it.

Police searched the trash bins behind the mansion.
Inside they found identical insect containers purchased from an exotic pet store two days before Noah's "accident."
