Chapter 17 - SARAH’S REVIEW

First Harvest completed a review of my conduct as guardian-protector.

The report found no theft or self-dealing.

It also identified failures.

I had not obtained account statements promptly.

I had allowed family mistreatment to continue because I feared appearing greedy.

I entered direct conflict without adequate safety planning.

I threw the plate.

The trustees retained Claire Donovan as co-protector for five more years.

I agreed.

Some supporters online called the oversight insulting.

They wanted a story in which one dramatic act proved I deserved absolute control.

Lily deserved better than anyone’s absolute control.

I began serving on the food-safety trust only after completing fiduciary training.

At my first meeting, I pushed to close North River Recovery immediately.

The experts recommended temporary supervised operation while contracts transferred safely.

I accused them of caution protecting corruption.

The chair asked me to review the consequences of sudden closure.

Dozens of noninvolved workers would lose jobs.

Waste disposal could be interrupted.

I reconsidered.

The company wound down over six months under monitors.

My urgency had been understandable.

It was not automatically the best operational decision.

I documented the correction.

Power became safer when I could be wrong without hiding it.

Hearthstone funded an independent study of food access among employees and local families.

The community trust expanded school meal partnerships.

Lily’s name appeared nowhere in marketing.

She had not chosen to become a symbol.

The burned-steak video remained online despite removal requests.

At nine, she found it.

She watched Helen lower the plate.

Then watched me throw it.

“People say you were awesome,” she said.

“I wasn’t.”

“You protected me.”

“I told you the truth and took you away afterward. Throwing the plate created another danger.”

“Did it feel good?”

“For a second.”

“Do you regret it?”

“Yes.”

She considered the answer.

“I liked that you got mad.”

“You deserved someone to be angry for you.”

“Can you be angry without throwing?”

“I’m learning.”

The conversation did not reduce Helen’s cruelty.

It kept my retaliation from becoming family mythology.

Lily asked to store the video in the private archive rather than let clips be the only record.

The archive included the full dinner, police report, court resolution, and later explanation.

Context remained available to her.

No public museum received the plate.

It had been destroyed after evidence retention ended.

Some objects deserved no permanent role.
