I did not remarry until Lily was twenty-one.
His name was Thomas Reed.
He was a civil engineer I met while designing the culinary training center in the former mansion.
He knew the public story.
I told him the private one gradually.
He did not ask whether I had won Hearthstone.
He asked what boundaries Lily needed.
We married at city hall.
Lily attended.
Claire and Ethan came to a small dinner afterward.
No board members.
No reporters.

I kept my legal surname because it matched Lily’s and belonged to the life I had built.

The burned food went into compost.

Daniel remained her father.
He became another adult she trusted.

Our relationship remained cautious.

We did not pretend the years of laughter had vanished.

“I wanted Ethan favored because I thought Daniel had always taken everything.”
“Lily did not take Daniel’s childhood.”
“I know.”
“Did you know then?”
“Somewhere.”
That was as close to complete explanation as we came.
No dramatic reconciliation followed.
We washed dishes together after Ethan’s engagement dinner.
Ordinary cooperation was enough.
Hearthstone’s profits stabilized.
The company expanded employee ownership.
The food-access foundation supplied rural schools and shelters through audited contracts.
