Chapter 10 – A Mother's Last Letter

Chapter 10 – A Mother's Last Letter

The first thing Grant did after Renata left the estate was walk upstairs to Lily's room.

He didn't know what he expected to find.

Maybe he expected his daughter to be asleep.

Maybe he expected everything to feel normal again.

But nothing had been normal for a long time.

Lily sat on the floor surrounded by drawings.

Hundreds of them.

Grant had seen the occasional picture before.

A flower.

A house.

A family.

He had never realized they were pieces of a story.

A story she had been desperately trying to tell.

He sat beside her.

"Lily."

She looked up.

"I need to ask you something."

Her expression immediately changed.

Fear.

Not of him.

Of the question.

Grant noticed.

He softened his voice.

"You don't have to answer."

She waited.

"Did Emma know?"

A pause.

Then Lily nodded.

Grant closed his eyes.

Of course she knew.

Emma had known everything.

She had walked into that bathroom because she knew something was wrong.

She had risked everything because she believed Lily.

And Grant...

Had punished her for it.

The next morning, Grant made the call he should have made weeks ago.

"Rachel Bennett."

The attorney answered.

"Mr. Callahan?"

"I want all charges against Emma Brooks reviewed immediately."

A pause.

"Are you withdrawing your complaint?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Grant looked through the window toward the garden.

Lily was sitting beside Margaret, drawing.

"Because I was wrong."

Rachel was silent.

Then:

"I'll need that in writing."

"You'll have it."

"And Mr. Callahan..."

"Yes?"

"If you're changing your position because of public pressure, it won't be enough."

Grant understood.

"I know."

"Then why?"

His answer came quietly.

"Because my daughter finally told me the truth."

Emma received the news two hours later.

Rachel entered her apartment holding a folder.

Emma looked up.

"What happened?"

Rachel sat down.

"The assault complaint is being withdrawn."

Emma stared.

"By who?"

"You know who."

A strange mixture of relief and anger crossed Emma's face.

"Grant."

Rachel nodded.

Emma looked away.

"He believed me."

"Yes."

"After everything."

Rachel didn't answer.

Because there was nothing to say.

Some wounds didn't disappear simply because someone finally admitted they were wrong.

At the Callahan estate, Detective Alvarez arrived with a warrant.

Not an arrest warrant.

A search warrant.

The investigation had changed.

The entire house was now evidence.

Renata's private rooms.

Her computer.

Her financial records.

Her communications.

Every hidden corner she believed no one would ever examine.

Grant stood in the foyer watching officers move through the mansion.

It felt strange.

This house had always represented control.

Power.

Security.

Now it felt like a crime scene.

Renata watched from a hotel suite across the city.

She had packed quickly.

Too quickly.

A person leaving on vacation packed differently than someone escaping.

She poured herself wine and stared at the television.

The news was already changing.

CALLAHAN EMPLOYEE CASE TAKES UNEXPECTED TURN

QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT BILLIONAIRE'S FIANCÉE

She turned the television off.

They were getting close.

Too close.

Her phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Tell me."

The voice on the other end sounded nervous.

"The police are searching everything."

"Did they find the backup?"

"No."

"Did they find Michael?"

Silence.

That silence told her everything.

"They're looking."

Renata closed her eyes.

Michael Harlan.

The one person who knew too much.

The one mistake she had never completely fixed.

At the estate, Alvarez entered Caroline's old study.

She found Grant standing beside the desk.

"You were right."

He looked at her.

"About what?"

"Your wife."

Grant looked down.

"Caroline."

Alvarez nodded.

"She was investigating Renata before she died."

Grant's face tightened.

"Did you find anything?"

The detective placed a folder on the desk.

"Not everything."

She opened it.

"But enough."

Inside were copies of financial records.

"Renata Cole wasn't her original name."

Grant stared at the documents.

"What?"

"She changed it eight years ago."

"Why?"

"We're still investigating."

Alvarez paused.

"But Caroline found something."

She handed him a photograph.

A younger Renata.

Different hair.

Different name.

Different life.

Grant stared at the woman he thought he knew.

He felt nothing.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Only disbelief.

How could someone live beside him for years and remain a stranger?

That evening, Margaret came to Grant with something wrapped in a cloth.

"Mr. Callahan."

He looked up.

"What is it?"

She placed it gently on the desk.

"I found this in Mrs. Caroline's room."

Grant unfolded the cloth.

Inside was a small wooden box.

His breath caught.

It belonged to Caroline.

He recognized it immediately.

"Where did you find it?"

"Hidden behind the fireplace."

Grant opened the box.

Inside were three things.

A photograph.

A key.

And an envelope.

The envelope had his name.

Grant.

His hands shook slightly.

He opened it.

My dearest Grant,

If you are reading this, then I am no longer able to protect Lily myself.

I wish I could tell you I was wrong. I wish I could tell you that my fears were nothing more than a mother's anxiety.

But I wasn't wrong.

Renata is dangerous.

Grant stopped reading.

The room blurred slightly.

He forced himself to continue.

She doesn't hurt people when others are watching. That is what makes her dangerous.

She knows how to appear kind. She knows how to make people question the victims instead of her.

His hand tightened around the paper.

I tried to warn you. But every time I mentioned my concerns, you told me I was stressed. That I was grieving. That I needed rest.

I don't blame you.

I know you loved me.

But love without listening can still cause harm.

Grant closed his eyes.

The sentence cut deeper than anything else.

Please don't make the same mistake with Lily.

Listen to her. Even if she cannot speak.

Look at what she shows you.

Believe what she feels.

A tear escaped before he could stop it.

He continued.

The day before my accident, I discovered something terrible. Renata was not only lying about her past. She was involved in something much bigger.

Michael Harlan found evidence.

He was supposed to meet me at four o'clock the day I died.

If he disappeared, it was not by choice.

Find him.

He has the truth.

The final lines were shorter.

Written more hurriedly.

As if Caroline had been running out of time.

Grant, please remember one thing.

Lily doesn't need a perfect father.

She needs a father who believes her.

Don't let my daughter become another person who is afraid to speak.

Love, Caroline

Grant lowered the letter.

For several minutes, he said nothing.

Then he covered his face with both hands.

The strongest man in the room finally broke.

Lily found him there.

She stood quietly in the doorway.

Grant looked up.

"I'm sorry."

The words came immediately.

"I'm so sorry."

Lily walked closer.

He expected her to stay away.

Instead, she climbed into his arms.

Grant held her tightly.

"I should have listened."

A small hand touched his cheek.

Lily wiped away his tears.

The gesture almost destroyed him.

Because children were supposed to need their parents.

Not comfort them.

Later that night, Detective Alvarez called.

"We found Michael Harlan."

Grant stood immediately.

"Where?"

A pause.

"Alive."

His breath caught.

"Where is he?"

"He was hiding."

"Why?"

The detective's voice became serious.

"Because he was afraid."

"Of Renata?"

"Yes."

Grant looked toward Lily's bedroom.

The little girl was finally asleep.

Safe.

For now.

"What did he tell you?"

Alvarez hesitated.

"He's willing to talk."

"About what?"

A long silence.

Then:

"About what happened to Caroline."

Grant gripped the phone.

"Tell me."

"We can't do it over the phone."

"Why?"

"Because Mr. Callahan..."

The detective's voice lowered.

"Michael says Caroline's death was not the only crime Renata committed."

Grant felt cold.

"What else?"

A pause.

"She had help."

Across the city, Renata stood in the darkness of her hotel room.

She watched the news update appear on her phone.

MYSTERY INVESTIGATOR LOCATED AFTER TWO YEARS

Her expression changed.

For the first time...

Fear appeared.

Real fear.

Michael was alive.

And Michael knew everything.

She picked up her phone.

The same number.

The same person who had helped her before.

When the call connected, she spoke one sentence.

"He was found."

Silence.

Then the voice replied:

"Then we finish this tonight."

Renata stared out at the city lights.

The game had changed.

The secrets were no longer buried.

May you like

And now...

Someone had to make sure they stayed that way.
