Chapter 8 – The Hidden Recording

Chapter 8 – The Hidden Recording

Grant's finger hovered over the mouse.

The file name stared back at him.

If You're Listening to This...

Outside the study, Renata stood frozen in the hallway. The blood drained from her face as she recognized the folder on the computer screen reflected faintly through the crack beneath the door.

No.

That drive was supposed to be gone.

Caroline had hidden it too well for anyone to find—but someone had.

Grant.

Renata quietly reached into her handbag and wrapped her fingers around her phone.

Not yet.

If she burst into the room now, Grant would know something was wrong.

She forced herself to breathe.

Smile.

Walk away.

She turned silently and disappeared down the hallway.

Inside the study, Grant clicked Play.

Static crackled through the speakers.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then Caroline's voice filled the room.

Soft.

Calm.

But unmistakably frightened.

"Grant... if you're hearing this, then I wasn't able to tell you everything myself."

Grant gripped the edge of the desk.

Hearing her voice after two years felt like reopening a wound that had never healed.

"Please don't stop the recording. Even if what I'm say sounds impossible."

She took a shaky breath.

"I started recording because I don't know who I can trust anymore."

Grant's heartbeat quickened.

The recording continued.

"I hired a private investigator six weeks ago."

Grant glanced toward the investigation folder.

Everything matched the letter.

"His name is Michael Harlan."

Another file in the folder bore the same name.

"He thought I was overreacting at first."

A faint, humorless laugh.

"He doesn't think that anymore."

Grant leaned closer to the speakers.

"Renata has lied about almost every part of her past."

Silence.

Then—

The recording abruptly cut off.

Grant frowned.

The audio player stopped.

File Corrupted.

"No..."

He clicked it again.

The same result.

Only one minute and eighteen seconds had survived.

Everything afterward was gone.

Grant stared at the screen in disbelief.

Across town, Detective Sofia Alvarez sat in the digital forensics laboratory.

A young analyst adjusted his glasses as lines of code scrolled across his monitor.

"The estate's surveillance server was damaged."

"Can you recover anything?"

"I'm trying."

He opened another window.

"The main bathroom cameras never existed."

Alvarez frowned.

"What?"

"The estate doesn't place cameras inside private rooms."

"I know."

"So whoever deleted footage..."

"...deleted the hallway cameras."

The analyst nodded.

"And something else."

He enlarged a system map.

"The estate uses two recording systems."

Alvarez leaned forward.

"Explain."

"The primary security server records continuously."

"And?"

"The maintenance department has an older backup system."

Alvarez's eyes narrowed.

"Does it record everything?"

"No."

"What does it record?"

"Hallways."

She felt her pulse quicken.

"The hallway outside the master bathroom?"

The analyst smiled.

"It appears no one remembered that camera."

Emma sat across from Rachel Bennett, trying to concentrate on legal paperwork.

Her phone rang.

Rachel glanced at the caller ID.

"Detective Alvarez."

Emma answered immediately.

"Did you find something?"

"I can't discuss details over the phone."

Emma's heart sank.

"But?"

"I need you at the precinct."

"When?"

"As soon as possible."

Emma looked at Rachel.

"We're coming."

At the Callahan estate, Lily wandered quietly into the conservatory.

She carried her sketchbook under one arm.

Sunlight poured through the glass ceiling, illuminating hundreds of orchids Caroline had once cared for herself.

Lily sat on the floor.

She opened to a blank page.

Instead of drawing flowers...

She drew a hallway.

Then a bathroom door.

Finally...

She drew herself standing outside it.

Listening.

She added another figure.

Emma.

Running.

Margaret happened to pass by.

She stopped.

"Lily?"

The little girl looked up.

Margaret sat beside her.

"What are you drawing?"

Lily pointed.

Bathroom.

Emma.

Door.

Then she tapped her own ear.

Margaret frowned.

"You heard something?"

Lily nodded.

She picked up a pencil.

Slowly...

Painfully...

She wrote one word.

Scream.

Margaret's eyes widened.

"You screamed?"

Lily shook her head.

Another word.

Inside.

Margaret looked at the drawing again.

Someone had screamed inside the bathroom.

Emma had heard it.

That explained why she had run.

Meanwhile, Renata sat in her private sitting room making another phone call.

"I need confirmation."

The man answered immediately.

"The backup server?"

"Yes."

"I checked months ago."

"And?"

"It shouldn't contain anything important."

Renata's voice hardened.

"Shouldn't?"

"It only records hallways."

She closed her eyes.

The hallway.

Emma had run through the hallway.

The timing.

The smell.

If the recording still existed...

It wouldn't show what happened inside the bathroom.

But it could destroy her entire story.

"You told everyone Emma attacked without warning."

"I know."

"If the hallway video shows her running because she heard something..."

Renata ended the call before he finished.

Late that afternoon, Detective Alvarez entered the interview room carrying a laptop.

Emma and Rachel both stood.

"What did you find?"

Alvarez connected the laptop to a monitor.

"The backup system recovered partial footage."

Emma held her breath.

The detective pressed Play.

Black-and-white security footage appeared.

The hallway outside the master suite.

Timestamp:

6:03:41 PM

Emma entered carrying a basket of laundry.

She walked normally.

Timestamp:

6:03:47 PM

Emma suddenly stopped.

She tilted her head.

Even without audio, it was obvious she had heard something.

Timestamp:

6:03:49 PM

She dropped the laundry basket.

Towels scattered across the floor.

Timestamp:

6:03:50 PM

She began running.

Not walking.

Not charging in anger.

Running in panic.

Straight toward the bathroom.

The video ended.

Emma stared at the screen.

"That's it?"

Alvarez nodded.

"The camera doesn't cover inside the room."

Rachel folded her arms.

"But it changes everything."

The detective agreed.

"It contradicts Miss Cole's statement."

Emma looked up.

"How?"

"Renata claimed you attacked her without warning."

Alvarez replayed the footage.

"You weren't looking for Renata."

She pointed toward the screen.

"You reacted to something."

Emma whispered,

"The scream."

Back at the mansion, Grant examined every document Caroline had hidden.

Most concerned Renata's finances.

Several companies.

Frequent name changes.

Addresses that no longer existed.

Nothing conclusive.

Then he found Michael Harlan's final report.

Only the last page remained.

The rest had been torn away.

At the bottom was one handwritten note.

I believe Mrs. Callahan is in immediate danger. Meeting scheduled Tuesday at 4:00 PM to discuss evidence.

Grant checked the date.

Tuesday.

Caroline's accident had happened...

Tuesday evening.

His hands began to shake.

Daniel knocked.

"Sir?"

Grant looked up.

"What is it?"

"The detective called."

Grant stood.

"Yes?"

"They recovered hallway footage."

"What does it show?"

Daniel hesitated.

"It shows Miss Brooks running toward the bathroom."

Grant frowned.

"So?"

"She wasn't chasing anyone."

Daniel swallowed.

"She was responding to something."

Grant slowly lowered Michael Harlan's report.

For days, he had tried to convince himself that perhaps everyone had misunderstood.

That Emma had overreacted.

That Renata had simply made a mistake.

But piece by piece...

Those explanations were disappearing.

That evening, Lily couldn't sleep.

She slipped quietly out of bed and wandered downstairs.

The mansion was silent.

She stopped outside Grant's study.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, Grant sat staring at Caroline's photograph.

He looked...

Lonely.

Lily pushed the door open a little farther.

Grant looked up.

"Lily?"

She walked inside carrying her stuffed rabbit.

Without saying a word, she climbed into his lap.

It had been nearly two years since she had done that.

Grant wrapped his arms around her instinctively.

"I miss her too."

Lily nodded.

He kissed the top of her head.

"I'm sorry."

Tears filled his eyes.

"I'm so sorry I haven't been listening."

Lily slowly lifted one small hand.

Then, with trembling fingers...

She pointed toward the family portrait on the desk.

Caroline.

Next...

She pointed toward Renata's smiling face in another framed photograph nearby.

Then she violently shook her head.

"No."

The whisper escaped before she could stop it.

Grant froze.

She pointed again.

Caroline.

Then Renata.

Again she whispered,

"No..."

It wasn't much.

Just one word.

But this time...

Grant knew exactly what she meant.

For the first time since Emma's arrest...

He no longer believed Renata's story.

He wasn't ready to accuse her.

He wasn't ready to forgive Emma.

But the certainty that had once guided every decision was gone.

And as he held his frightened daughter close, one thought echoed relentlessly through his mind:

What if I arrested the only person who ever truly protected my child?
