Chapter 3 – Questions That Couldn't Be Ignored
The next morning, I didn't confront Daniel.
Instead, I met with detectives who were already reviewing the circumstances surrounding Mia's sudden death.
I handed them the video.
"I don't know what this means," I said.
"But I know my husband wasn't honest."
The lead investigator watched the footage carefully.
"Mrs. Carter, lying about who dropped off a child doesn't necessarily explain what caused her medical emergency."
"I understand."
"But I need to know why he lied."
Investigators interviewed daycare staff, reviewed attendance logs, and compared them with phone records and security footage.
Their findings painted a troubling picture.
Daniel had falsely claimed he stayed with Mia until she entered the classroom.
He had not.
He left before she entered the building.
Vanessa admitted Daniel had asked her to walk Mia inside because he was late for a meeting.
She said she agreed because she believed it was harmless.
The investigators also determined that the daycare staff were unaware an unauthorized adult had completed the drop-off.
Separately, medical specialists completed their review.
They concluded Mia had suffered a sudden allergic reaction after unknowingly being exposed to an allergen.
The investigation found no evidence that anyone had intentionally harmed her.
But Daniel's dishonesty had delayed the investigation by sending everyone down the wrong path.
When detectives asked why he lied, he lowered his head.
"I knew I broke the daycare rules."
"I thought if people found out I left her with someone else, they'd blame me."
One detective answered quietly,
