Chapter 2 – The Knock at the Door

The silence inside the nursery lasted only a few seconds.
Then came three firm knocks at the front door.
Not hurried.
Not angry.
Professional.
Margaret's confident smile vanished.
Vanessa slowly set her wine glass on the dresser, suddenly unsure why her hands were shaking.
Daniel adjusted the blanket around Ethan before handing him carefully to Claire.
"Hold him," he whispered. "Everything changes now."
Claire looked at him with confusion.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel simply nodded toward the front hallway.
"I planned for this."
The front door opened.
Two military police officers entered first, followed by a Child Protective Services investigator carrying a thick leather folder. Behind them walked Daniel's attorney, Richard Lawson, holding another case file nearly three inches thick.
Margaret immediately recovered her composure.
"What is the meaning of this?" she demanded.
The senior military police officer spoke calmly.
"Mrs. Margaret Collins?"
"Yes."
"You are being detained while we investigate multiple allegations involving unlawful imprisonment, assault resulting in bodily injury, interference with military family communications, and child neglect."
Margaret laughed.
"This is ridiculous."
She pointed toward Claire.
"That girl is lying because she wants my house."
Richard calmly removed a document from his folder.
"No, Mrs. Collins."
He unfolded the deed.
"This house belongs to Captain Daniel Collins through the Collins Military Family Trust."
Margaret frowned.
"That's impossible."
"It was transferred three years ago."
Vanessa stepped backward.
"My mother has lived here for twenty years."
Richard nodded.
"Occupancy does not create ownership."
He handed another document to the CPS investigator.
"Your temporary occupancy agreement expired four months ago."
Margaret's face slowly turned white.
"No..."
Daniel finally spoke.
"I asked you to treat my wife like family."
"You chose to treat her like a prisoner."
The CPS investigator gently approached Claire.
"Mrs. Collins... may I examine the baby?"
Claire nodded with trembling hands.
The investigator touched Ethan's forehead.
Her expression changed immediately.
"He needs emergency medical treatment."
Daniel had already anticipated those words.
The ambulance he had requested was waiting outside.
Within minutes Ethan was loaded carefully into the ambulance while Claire sat beside him.
Before the doors closed, she looked back toward Daniel.
"I don't want to leave you."
He squeezed her hand.
"You already survived the hardest part."
His eyes drifted toward the house.
"Now it's my turn."
As the ambulance pulled away, Margaret screamed from the front porch.
"You ungrateful boy!"
Daniel never turned around.
Neither did the military police.
The handcuffs clicked shut.
