Chapter 3 – The Truth No One Could Deny

By sunrise, every room inside the mansion had become a crime scene.
Forensic investigators photographed bruises, collected broken phones, downloaded security recordings, and searched every bedroom.
Margaret still insisted she had done nothing wrong.
"I disciplined her because she was disrespectful."
One detective looked up.
"You understand that isn't a legal defense?"
Vanessa remained silent until investigators entered her bedroom.
Inside they discovered Claire's hidden cellphone.
It had been smashed with a hammer.
The forensic technician smiled.
"Fortunately..."
He held up the memory chip.
"This survived."
Hours later the recovered files appeared on a monitor.
Video after video filled the screen.
Margaret dragging Claire by her injured arm.
Vanessa laughing while Ethan cried alone inside the nursery.
The baby screaming for nearly forty minutes while neither woman entered the room.
Then came the recording that silenced everyone.
Claire sat on the nursery floor secretly recording herself.
"If Daniel ever watches this..."
She struggled to breathe.
"I'm sorry."
"I don't know how much longer I can protect Ethan."
"I keep pretending everything is fine because I don't want him distracted while he's deployed."
She gently kissed Ethan's forehead.
"If something happens to me..."
"Please tell him I never stopped loving him."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Combat had shown him terrible things.
Nothing had prepared him for hearing his wife's goodbye.
The detective quietly turned off the monitor.
"We have enough."
Richard placed another folder on the table.
"There is one final matter."
He revealed Margaret's financial records.
During Daniel's deployment she had transferred nearly six hundred thousand dollars from trust accounts into businesses owned by Vanessa.
Forgery.
Identity theft.
Financial exploitation.
The detective slowly closed the folder.
"This investigation just became much larger."
Vanessa burst into tears.

Margaret simply stared ahead.
Neither woman noticed that every excuse they had ever prepared had already been destroyed by their own actions.
