Chapter 3 - THE CHILD SHE NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT

Elena woke eighteen hours later.

Her first word was not my name.

“Baby.”

I took her hand.

“She’s alive.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Elise?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes and cried without sound.

Then she looked at me.

“You came.”

The sentence hurt.

“Of course I came.”

“They said you wouldn’t.”

“Who?”

“Margaret.”

I leaned closer.

“What happened?”

Elena remembered drinking tea at my mother’s house.

She had gone there to confront Margaret about company records.

Marcus was present.

So was Dr. Wren.

The tea tasted bitter.

Then she became dizzy.

She woke briefly in a dark room.

Heard my mother say, “If Daniel knows, we lose everything.”

Then nothing.

I asked about the police report.

Elena said Marcus attacked her two months earlier.

She did not recant.

A police captain visited the next day and told her the report had been resolved privately.

She assumed an investigation continued.

It never did.

Claire asked about the tunnel collapse.

Elena had found payroll records for workers who officially died but continued receiving wages afterward.

The wages flowed into shell accounts.

Someone was using dead men’s identities.

But the deeper problem was engineering.

Inspection reports were altered.

Warnings about concrete failure were deleted.

Marcus authorized cheaper reinforcement.

Margaret approved the cost savings.

The collapse killed four men.

They covered it up.

“Where are the records?” Claire asked.

Elena looked at me.

“In Daniel’s storage unit.”

I had no storage unit.

She explained she rented one under my name because she believed my family monitored her accounts.

The key was hidden inside my old Army medic bag.

Then I asked the question that had been waiting.

“Who is the other child?”

Elena went still.

Her face changed.

“Daniel—”

“The doctor saw the scar.”

She looked toward the nursery.

“I was nineteen.”

“What happened?”

“I had a son.”

“Where is he?”

Her voice broke.

“I don’t know.”

The father was Marcus.

I stood so quickly the chair hit the wall.

Elena began crying.

“It wasn’t a relationship.”

“What does that mean?”

“He assaulted me.”

The room went silent.

Elena had been an intern at Carter Civil Works.

Marcus cornered her after a company retreat.

She reported it to Margaret.

My mother offered money.

Then threatened her career.

When Elena became pregnant, Margaret arranged a private adoption through Dr. Wren.

Elena was told the baby died shortly after birth.

Years later, she learned that was false.

The child lived.

The adoption records were sealed.

Then she met me.

She did not know I was Marcus’s brother until our third date.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was afraid you would think I chose you because of him.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you know where the child was?”

“No.”

“Did Marcus?”

“I think so.”

My hands shook.

My brother assaulted the woman I loved.

My mother covered it up.

Dr. Wren stole the child.

Years later, they tried to bury Elena alive after she discovered company crimes.

Claire asked if the old child could be motive now.

Elena nodded.

“I found a payment labeled M.C. GUARDIAN SUPPORT.”

Initials.

M.C.

Marcus Carter.

Or something else.

The payment continued every month for eight years.

Recipient hidden behind a trust.

We went to my storage unit with police.

The Army medic bag contained the key.

Inside the unit were boxes of ledgers, inspection reports, and copies of emails.

Elena had built a complete case.

Then Claire found a locked steel case.

Inside was a photograph of a seven-year-old boy.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

My father’s chin.

On the back:

NOAH — DO NOT LET MARCUS FIND HIM.

I looked at Elena.

“You know who he is.”

She covered her mouth.

“I found the photo last week.”

“Where?”

“In Margaret’s safe.”

Claire turned it over.

A school logo appeared on the child’s sweater.

St. Matthew’s Academy.

A private school outside Portland.

Police went immediately.

The principal checked records.

No student named Noah matched.

But one boy fit the photograph.

Evan Price.

Guardian: Dr. Philip Wren.

The doctor who drugged Elena.

May you like

The boy had been absent for three days.

And Dr. Wren had disappeared.
