Chapter 6 - THE BRIDGE WHERE THEY WANTED MY SIGNATURE

Marcus chose an unfinished bridge project outside Salem.

A Carter Civil Works site.

Concrete pillars.

Steel beams.

A river below.

He told me to come alone with the signed release.

Claire fitted me with a transmitter.

Priya prepared a decoy document.

Elena wanted to come.

Her incision was fresh.

Her body weak.

She insisted.

“You are not leaving me behind while they use my children.”

No one could argue with that.

She remained in the command vehicle with medical staff.

I entered the site carrying the folder.

Marcus stood on the unfinished deck.

Noah sat near a support column holding Elise.

Dr. Wren stood beside him.

The newborn cried softly.

I kept my voice calm.

“Let the children go.”

“Document first,” Marcus said.

I placed it on a worktable.

Wren examined the signature.

He looked at Marcus.

“It’s real.”

It was not.

But Priya had replicated the digital seal well enough.

Marcus smiled.

“Now you understand family.”

“No. I understand leverage.”

He told Noah to bring Elise forward.

The boy stood.

He looked terrified.

Then he ran toward me.

Wren grabbed his jacket.

Noah kicked backward.

Elise slipped.

I lunged and caught the baby.

Agents moved.

Marcus drew a gun.

Wren pulled Noah in front of him.

Elena saw from the command van.

She opened the door despite the medic’s protests.

Marcus pointed at me.

“You always got to be the good son.”

“I left.”

“Exactly. You left me with everything.”

“The company?”

“Mom. Dad. The workers. Every problem.”

“You chose control.”

“I chose survival.”

“No. You chose people you could bury.”

His face changed.

He fired.

The bullet struck the steel beam near my head.

Agents returned fire.

Marcus dropped behind cover.

Wren dragged Noah toward the edge.

Elena climbed the access stairs.

Weak.

Bleeding through her bandage.

She called her son’s name.

“Noah!”

He turned.

For the first time, he saw her awake.

Alive.

His face broke.

“Mom?”

Wren lost control for one second.

Noah bit his hand and pulled free.

Elena reached him.

Agents tackled Wren.

Marcus ran across the unfinished bridge.

I followed.

He reached the end where the deck stopped above the river.

No escape.

He turned the gun on himself.

“Stay back.”

“Put it down.”

“You think they’ll believe Elena over me?”

“Yes.”

“You think Mom will testify?”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

“She never chooses you.”

“This isn’t about who she chooses.”

“It always was.”

The gun shook.

Then Margaret’s voice came through a police loudspeaker below.

“Marcus.”

She had been brought under guard.

He looked down.

She stood beside Claire.

“Put the gun down,” she said.

“You chose Daniel.”

“No.”

“Then help me.”

Her voice cracked.

“I chose you every time. That is how we got here.”

Marcus stared.

For the first time, my mother told him the truth without protecting him.

He lowered the gun slightly.

Then Wren shouted from behind the agents.

“Marcus, the document is fake!”

Marcus looked at the folder.

Rage returned.

He raised the gun toward me.

A shot fired.

Marcus fell backward.

Not from police.

From Wren.

The doctor had taken an officer’s sidearm during the struggle.

He shot Marcus to silence him.

May you like

Then he pointed the gun at Noah.

Elena stepped between them.
