Chapter 6: The Architect of the Empire

Three days after walking away from the marble floors of Rosemont Medical Center, Daniel Carter’s world began to splinter.

It didn’t happen with a sudden, dramatic explosion. Instead, it was a quiet, systematic dismantling—like a skyscraper having its load-bearing pillars hollowed out one by one.

In the executive boardroom of Carter Enterprises, the air was thick with panic.

Daniel sat at the head of the mahogany table, his tie loosened, his eyes bloodshot. On the projector screen, the company’s stock chart showed a steep, merciless crimson line plunging downward.

"This makes no sense!" Daniel slammed his fist on the table, his voice hoarse. "The Hale Group only pulled out of the Rosemont expansion. Why are our other major partners suddenly backing out of their contracts?!"

The Chief Financial Officer adjusted his glasses, staring intently at his tablet, terrified to make eye contact.

"Mr. Carter... it’s not just about the Hale Group's withdrawal," the CFO stammered. "It’s because all of our proprietary logistics software and supply-chain algorithms are registered under a private patent. A patent held exclusively by Evelyn."

Daniel froze, his hand suspended in midair. "What did you just say?"

"She didn’t just help you manage the business, sir," the CFO said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "She designed the entire operational architecture. Carter Enterprises doesn't own the rights to the system. She does. Without her signature, we are legally barred from using our own operating platform."

A sickening realization washed over Daniel.

He remembered the countless late nights Evelyn had spent quietly hunched over her laptop. Back then, he had patronizingly assumed she was just keeping herself busy with minor administrative tasks. He had never bothered to ask what she was actually building.

She hadn't been standing in his shadow.

She had been the one casting it.
