Chapter 8: The Price of Silence

Taking advantage of the moment Victor Hale was cornered by a group of politicians, Daniel slipped through the crowd, catching Evelyn as she stepped out onto the quiet, moonlit balcony for a breath of fresh air.
"Evelyn!" Daniel called out, his voice a frantic mix of anger and desperation. "We need to talk."
Evelyn stopped. She didn't flinch. She slowly turned around, looking at him with an expression so vacant, so devoid of emotion, that it chilled him to the bone. There was no hatred in her eyes. Only absolute indifference.
"There is nothing left to discuss, Daniel," she said quietly.
"There is everything to discuss!" Daniel stepped closer, though he stopped when she subtly shifted her weight, making her boundaries clear. "Eleven years, Evelyn. We built that company together. You can't just freeze my entire operating system out of spite! That mistress—I threw her out. She’s being prosecuted for assault. I did what you wanted!"
Evelyn let out a soft, humorless laugh.
"You threw her out because she became a liability, Daniel. Not because you suddenly found a conscience."
She took a step toward him, the moonlight catching the sharp angles of her face.
"For eleven years, I gave you my mind, my effort, and my silence. I let you take the credit because I loved you, and I thought my sacrifice was building our future. But you didn't want a partner. You wanted a beautiful, silent prop to keep your secrets."
She leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"The patents belong to me. The logistics belong to me. The empire you boasted about was never yours."
"Evelyn, please," Daniel begged, his polished facade completely disintegrating. "Without you, Carter Enterprises will go bankrupt by the end of the month. I'll lose everything."
Evelyn smiled, a cold, beautiful expression.
"Then I suggest you start packing, Daniel. Because I am just getting started."
Turning on her heel, her emerald gown sweeping against the marble balcony, she walked back into the warm, golden light of the ballroom.

As she crossed the threshold, two burly security guards quietly stepped into the doorway, blocking Daniel from following her.
He was left standing outside in the cold, staring at the closed glass doors, finally realizing that the woman he had spent a decade overlooking was the only force that had ever kept him afloat.
