Chapter 1

My husband threw our eight-month-old son onto the floor during an argument—so I slapped him before I even realized my hand had moved.
It happened at our home outside Phoenix on a Friday evening.
Our baby, Lucas, had been crying for nearly an hour.
My husband, Ryan, was already furious about something that happened at work.
“Make him stop!” he shouted.
“He’s a baby, Ryan.”
I reached for Lucas, but Ryan picked him up first.
The crying became louder.
Ryan suddenly snapped.
“I said stop!”
Then he dropped Lucas hard onto the living-room carpet.
My heart stopped.
“LUCAS!”
I rushed down and pulled my baby into my arms.
He was screaming.
I looked up at Ryan and slapped him across the face.
“Don’t you ever touch my child again!”
Ryan stared at me like I was the one who had crossed the line.
“You just hit me.”
“You threw our baby!”
I grabbed my phone and called 911.
Ryan tried to take it from me.
Then our seven-year-old daughter, Emma, ran downstairs.
“Dad, stop!”
Ryan froze.
Emma was holding her tablet against her chest.
“I recorded what you did.”
Ryan’s expression changed instantly.
He stepped toward her.
“Give me that.”
I moved between them.
“Touch her and I swear the police will see everything.”
Minutes later, paramedics were examining Lucas while two officers questioned Ryan.
Then Emma whispered something to one of them.
“This wasn’t the first time.”
I stared at my daughter.
“What do you mean?”
She opened a hidden folder on her tablet.
There were videos from nights when I had been working late.
In every one, Ryan was alone with the children.
But the newest recording was different.
My mother-in-law was standing beside him.
And just before the video ended, I heard her say, “Do it again tomorrow. She’ll lose custody once everyone thinks she’s the dangerous one.”
Ryan suddenly lunged for the tablet.
One officer grabbed him.

I looked at my mother-in-law’s face frozen on the screen.
Then the officer turned to me and said, “Ma’am, there’s something else in these videos you need to see.”
