Chapter 3

Alexander opened the folder. Inside were high-resolution still frames taken from the villa’s security cameras—angles Vanessa Monroe didn't know existed.

The images were undeniable.

Frame one: Vanessa stepping into Olivia’s path. Frame two: Vanessa’s hand making direct contact with Olivia’s shoulder. Frame three: The deliberate, forceful shove that sent a pregnant woman backward into the deep end.

"The video has already been secured on off-site servers," Marcus continued. "We’ve filed for an emergency restraining order. The LAPD has opened a formal investigation for assault resulting in grievous bodily harm."

"And the financial side?" Alexander asked, his voice low and devoid of emotion.

"Vanessa’s main holding company, Monroe Development, relies entirely on a thirty-million-dollar credit line underwritten by Hartwell Capital," Marcus replied. "I triggered the morality and safety breach clause ten minutes ago. The credit line is frozen. Her creditors have already been notified."

Alexander closed the folder. "I don't just want her bankrupt, Marcus. I want her stripped of every contract, every board seat, and every property lease tied to my name by the end of the week."

"Consider it done, Mr. Hartwell."

Back at the Napa Valley estate, the sun had fully set, casting long, dark shadows across the stone patio.

The luxury villa was entirely empty of guests, but it was far from quiet.

Vanessa Monroe stood in the middle of her grand living room, her hands trembling as she dialed number after number on her phone.

"Line declined." "User unavailable." "Voicemail full."

Every investor who had clinked glasses with her three hours ago was now refusing her calls. The rumor mill in California’s high society moved faster than the news, and video clips recorded by guests on the veranda had already begun circulating in private group chats.

The heavy front doors of the villa clicked open.

Vanessa spun around, hope flashing in her eyes for a split second. "Alex?"

It wasn't Alexander.

Four men in dark suits walked in, accompanied by two local police officers and a woman holding a clipboard.

"Vanessa Monroe?" the lead officer asked, stepping forward.

Vanessa straightened her posture, trying desperately to cling to the remains of her dignity. "Do you have any idea whose property you are standing on? This is my estate."

The woman with the clipboard stepped forward. "Correction, Ms. Monroe. As of 6:00 p.m. today, Hartwell Real Estate Holdings executed a lease termination based on criminal activity on the premises. You are currently trespassing."

"This is ridiculous!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking. "It was a misunderstanding! Olivia lost her balance!"

The officer pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Ms. Monroe, you are under arrest for assault and reckless endangerment. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the cold steel snapped around her wrists, Vanessa looked out the glass doors toward the pool.

The water was completely still now. The scattered white roses still floated near the edge, ruined and waterlogged.

She thought pushing Olivia into the water would destroy the one thing standing between her and Alexander’s fortune. She thought a quiet "accident" would hide her desperation.

Instead, as she was escorted out of the front gates in the back of a police cruiser, she watched two flatbed trucks towing away her luxury sports cars—repossessed by the bank before the night was even over.

Alexander Hartwell had built an empire on patience and strategy.

But Vanessa had forced him to protect his family.

And she was about to learn that when a man like Alexander decides to dismantle your life, he doesn't leave behind even the foundation.
