Chapter 5

Six months later.
The quiet morning air over St. Helena carried the sweet, crisp scent of early spring.
Inside the primary bedroom of the Hartwell estate, soft golden sunlight poured through the sheer linen curtains, resting on a wooden crib crafted from solid white oak.
Alexander stood beside the crib, dressed in a casual charcoal sweater, gently holding a tiny, warm bundle wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.
Little Lucas Hartwell—born healthy and strong three weeks earlier—slept peacefully, his tiny fingers curled around Alexander’s thumb.
Olivia walked into the room, wearing a soft cream cardigan, holding two cups of warm tea. She set the cups on the nightstand, walked over to her husband, and rested her head lightly against his shoulder as they looked down at their son together.
"He has your hands," Olivia whispered with a faint, peaceful smile.
"He has your calm," Alexander replied softly, kissing her temple.
The nightmare that had begun six months ago beside Vanessa Monroe’s pool felt a world away now. The media storm had long faded, replaced by the quiet, steady rhythm of family life.
There was a light knock at the bedroom door. Marcus Vance stepped inside, holding a single leather folder under his arm.
"Sorry to disturb you, Alexander, Olivia," Marcus said politely, keeping his voice low so as not to wake the baby. "Final updates from the court."
Alexander carefully set Lucas down in the crib, brushed a thumb over the baby’s forehead, and walked with Olivia toward the balcony doors to speak with Marcus.
"The criminal sentencing wrapped up an hour ago," Marcus reported, opening the folder. "Vanessa Monroe entered a formal guilty plea to felony assault and reckless endangerment. The judge denied probation. She has been sentenced to four years in state prison."
Olivia took a slow breath, her hand resting over Alexander’s arm. "And her family?"
"Richard Monroe sold his remaining personal properties last month to pay off outstanding debts," Marcus continued. "He and his wife have relocated out of state. Monroe Logistics has been completely integrated into Hartwell Capital’s green transport division—every employee kept their job, but the Monroe name has been erased from the registry."
Marcus closed the folder with a satisfying snap. "It’s completely over."
"Thank you, Marcus," Alexander said quietly. "For everything."
After Marcus left, Alexander and Olivia walked out onto the private upper balcony overlooking the sprawling vineyards. Down in the yard below, eight-year-old Emma was running happily across the green lawn with their Golden Retriever, her laughter echoing brightly across the estate.
The sun rose higher, bathing the valley in brilliant warmth.
Vanessa Monroe had believed that power came from wealth, status, and stepping over others to get what she wanted. But standing on the balcony, listening to his daughter’s laughter and hearing his newborn son softly cooing inside, Alexander knew where true strength lived.

It wasn't in the empires he built or the fortunes he commanded.
It was right here—in the family he had protected, and the quiet peace they had earned together.
