Chapter 23 - THE CHILD WITHOUT A PHOTOGRAPH

The fertility clinic’s archived inventory listed two unexplained temperature changes during Elena’s final month.

One embryo produced Rosalie.

The other was marked nonviable.

No destruction witness signed the record.

Victor approved the closure.

Lucinda entered the result.

Celeste received the laboratory notice.

She had never told Elena because Lucinda claimed the embryo stopped developing before transfer.

Elena clearly did not believe her.

A private payment left Lark Beauty Holdings three days after Rosalie’s birth.

Recipient:

North Harbor Family Services.

The organization placed infants with medically trained caregivers while parentage disputes were resolved.

It closed four years earlier.

No surviving client list appeared in public records.

Miriam obtained a sealed court order.

The files contained one unidentified infant placement associated with Elena’s fertility-clinic number.

Sex:

Male.

Biological parent information:

Restricted.

Placement name:

Evan North.

Jonathan stared at the page.

“A son?”

“Possibly,” Miriam said. “The genetic material has not been verified.”

The child would be close to Rosalie’s age.

No photograph appeared.

No current address.

The placement ended after eleven months with one handwritten notation:

TRANSFERRED TO PATERNAL FAMILY.

Jonathan had no relatives approved for infant placement.

His parents were dead.

His only living uncle denied knowledge.

The signature authorizing the transfer resembled Jonathan’s.

This time, he recognized the circumstances immediately.

The date fell on the day he signed Sophie’s first preschool enrollment forms.

Victor had delivered the packet personally.

Another signature collected during an ordinary family decision had been attached to a hidden child transfer.

Jonathan sat alone before speaking to Sophie.

He did not explain every legal detail.

“We found a record suggesting there may be another child connected to the clinic.”

“A brother?”

“Maybe.”

“Does Rosalie know?”

“Her advocate will tell her separately.”

“Are you going to find him?”

“Yes.”

“Are you staying tonight?”

“Yes.”

Sophie leaned against the doorway.

“Okay.”

The investigation traced North Harbor’s bank account to a publishing scholarship managed through Carter Publishing.

Jonathan had approved annual charitable payments without seeing individual beneficiary names.

One scholarship recipient appeared every year beneath initials only.

E.N.

The latest payment had gone to a private primary school outside Seattle.

Police contacted the school quietly.

No student named Evan North attended.

The initials belonged to a family-support employee named Evelyn Nash.

She had collected the payments on behalf of a child whose identity remained sealed.

Evelyn agreed to meet investigators at a public child-advocacy center.

She arrived alone.

“No child will be produced until the court confirms who is asking,” she said.

Miriam showed the order.

Evelyn examined it carefully.

“Jonathan Carter signed the original transfer.”

“The signature was attached fraudulently.”

“That is what Elena warned might happen.”

“You knew Elena?”

“I was her fertility nurse.”

Celeste’s face drained of color when she saw Evelyn through the secure feed.

“You told us the second embryo failed.”

“No. Lucinda told you.”

Evelyn had assisted with both transfers.

Rosalie’s surrogate was Melissa.

The second surrogate withdrew after complications.

The pregnancy continued under hospital supervision, but the baby was born extremely premature.

Victor ordered the child placed through North Harbor while he determined how the birth might affect Elena’s trust.

“Was the child male?” Miriam asked.

Evelyn did not answer.

“The paper says male.”

“The paper was altered.”

“What is the child’s sex?”

“Female.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

Another daughter.

“Where is she?”

“Before I answer, I need you to understand what she has been told.”

The child had grown up knowing Elena Carter was her biological mother.

Unlike Rosalie, she had not been told Jonathan abandoned her.

She had been told Jonathan killed Elena by refusing experimental treatment.

Victor created the story from genuine disagreements between Jonathan and Elena’s doctors. Jonathan had opposed a treatment he believed would prolong pain without improving survival.

Elena ultimately made her own decision.

The child received edited recordings making Jonathan appear to control it.

“Who raised her?” Jonathan asked.

“A woman Elena trusted.”

“Name.”

Evelyn turned toward Celeste.

Celeste stood abruptly.

“No.”

The camera in Celeste’s interview room went dark.

By the time officers opened the door, she had exited through the attorney corridor using an emergency credential Elena created years earlier.

Her phone remained on the table.

One message had arrived from an unknown number.

HE KNOWS ABOUT THE SECOND GIRL. MOVE HER BEFORE SOPHIE CHANGES HIS MIND.

The sender attached a live photograph.

A blond child sat inside a car holding a pair of large silver scissors across her lap.

A woman’s hand rested on the steering wheel.

On one finger was Elena’s wedding ring.

Jonathan had buried that ring with his wife.

The apartment intercom rang.

Sophie stood beside him when a young girl’s voice came through the speaker.

“Jonathan Carter?”

“Yes.”

“My name is not Rose.”

Behind the voice, a car engine started.

The girl continued:

“Celeste says Elena left me the publishing company because you chose Sophie.”

The connection ended.

On Sophie’s green dinosaur, the recording light began flashing without anyone pressing its paw.

A new voice emerged from the toy.

Elena’s.

“Jonathan, if the second girl reaches Sophie before the truth does, do not assume Celeste is bringing her home.”

The recording paused.

Then Elena whispered:

“She is bringing her to replace you.”
