Chapter 6 - The Night Lily Disappeared

Lily vanished three days before Serena’s preliminary hearing.

Her apartment door stood open.

Her phone remained on the counter.

Blood marked the hallway wall.

Victor received a message twenty minutes later.

Withdraw Elena’s recording or the nanny disappears permanently.

Serena was in custody.

Beatrice remained under house arrest.

Adrian was cooperating.

Someone else still served them.

Marco reviewed security footage.

A Blackwood vehicle collected Lily outside her building.

The driver wore Victor’s security uniform.

His face was hidden.

Only senior personnel could access that vehicle.

Suspicion turned toward Marco.

He surrendered his badge voluntarily.

“I did not take her.”

Victor wanted to believe him.

Evidence mattered more.

The vehicle’s access log showed Marco’s code.

Then Rosa remembered seeing the deputy security director, Caleb Stone, watching Lily during the hospital visit.

Caleb had served the Blackwoods for eleven years.

He resented Marco’s promotion.

Financial records showed Serena paid Caleb through a shell company.

Police tracked the vehicle to an abandoned textile warehouse near Lake Michigan.

Lily woke tied to a chair inside a cold storage room.

Caleb stood near the door.

“You should have stayed quiet.”

“You broke Ethan’s wrist?”

“No. I only cleaned things up.”

He had disabled cameras.

Removed medical bottles.

Planted drugs in Caroline’s car.

Warned Serena whenever staff complained.

He described each act as following orders.

“What happens to me?” Lily asked.

“You sign a statement saying you attacked the child and edited the recording.”

“And then?”

“You leave Chicago.”

“You mean die.”

Caleb did not answer.

Lily began talking.

Not to persuade him.

To keep him distracted.

“You think Serena will protect you?”

“She paid me.”

“She paid Adrian too.”

His expression shifted.

“She gave police his name before yours.”

Caleb checked his phone.

That movement bought Lily seconds.

She tipped the chair sideways.

The metal frame struck his knees.

He fell.

Lily dragged herself toward an emergency alarm mounted near the floor.

Caleb caught her ankle.

She kicked backward.

The alarm sounded.

Victor’s security team had tracked the vehicle independently of police.

Marco entered first.

He tackled Caleb before the man reached his weapon.

Lily was rescued with bruises, a fractured finger, and hypothermia.

At the hospital, Victor sat beside her bed.

“I should never have allowed you to return home without protection.”

“I refused protection.”

“I should have explained the danger.”

“You did.”

“Then I should have made you accept it.”

Lily looked at him.

“That would still be control.”

He stopped.

She was right.

Protection without consent could become another locked room.

“What should I have done?”

“Asked what would make me feel safe.”

Victor nodded.

“What would?”

“A home Serena cannot take from me. Legal protection for Rosa and the staff. Caroline’s name cleared. And no more treating employees like they become invisible after leaving the room.”

Victor promised nothing immediately.

Promises made in hospital rooms often served the speaker.

Instead, he asked Marco to begin implementing each request.

May you like

That was better.
