Chapter 6 - Wildflowers of the Field

While Genevieve was dressing, a quiet, beautiful movement was happening at the edge of the village.

Little Marc, the seven-year-old boy who had spent his childhood hiding from patrol cars, had gathered a dozen children from the neighborhood. They carried small wicker baskets and old wooden crates, their bare feet kicking up the dust as they ran toward the open meadows just outside Saint-Avold.

These meadows had once been a war zone, scarred by deep tank ruts, littered with rusted barbed wire, and scorched by mortar fire. But nature, like the hearts of the villagers, possessed a quiet, stubborn resilience. Over the last few days of rain, thousands of wild daisies, purple lavender, and bright yellow buttercups had burst through the ruined earth, covering the old trenches in a sea of vibrant color.

"Hurry!" Marc called out to the others, his voice bright with an excitement that had been missing for years. "We need to get the best ones before the sun gets too hot! Only the brightest flowers for Genevieve!"

The children worked with joyful speed, their small hands snapping the green stems, careful not to bruise the delicate petals. They sang old French nursery rhymes as they worked, their voices rising over the quiet meadows where tanks had roared only a week ago.

Within an hour, they returned to the village, their baskets overflowing with the fresh, wild harvest. They brought the flowers to the church courtyard, where Colette and Madame Laurent were waiting.

"Look at these!" Madame Laurent gasped, her eyes softening as she reached into Marc's basket. "They are beautiful, children. Absolutely beautiful."

Using her mother's old silk sewing ribbons, Colette began to weave the wild daisies and purple lavender together. She created a small, fragrant bouquet for Genevieve’s hands, and a delicate, circular crown of lavender buds for her hair. The rest of the flowers were scattered along the stone steps of the church, turning the bullet-scarred entrance into a pathway of spring.

Genevieve stepped out onto the porch, her eyes widening as she saw the children arranging the yellow buttercups along the path.

"They grew back, Genevieve!" Marc said, running up to her and handing her the lavender crown. "The forest was hiding them for you."

Genevieve knelt in the dust, her arms wrapping around the boy as she placed the fragrant crown on her head. The scent of wild lavender and fresh earth filled her senses, xua tan những ký ức đau thương. It was a bouquet of hope, gathered by the hands of the future.
