THE BELLS OF LIBERATION / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Path of Gratitude

Genevieve stepped out of the cottage into the brilliant, golden morning. The sound of the church bell was a heavy, beautiful heartbeat in her chest, guiding her steps. She wore her mother’s cream linen dress, her wavy brown hair falling softly over her shoulders beneath the crown of wild lavender. In her hands, she clutched the rustic bouquet of daisies.

There was no red carpet, no expensive musicians, and no carriage to carry her. But as she walked down the cobblestone lane, she found herself walking through a corridor of pure, overwhelming love.

The entire population of Saint-Avold had lined the street. Women stood on the porches, waving their clean white handkerchiefs, their faces wet with tears of joy. Old veterans of the Great War stood at attention along the stone wall, their chests decorated with faded ribbons, saluting her with a solemn, tearful pride.

"God bless you, Genevieve!" an old woman called out from her window, tossing a handful of dried rose petals onto the path.

Even the young Allied soldiers stood along the edge of the square, their helmets held over their hearts, their eyes filled with a deep, silent respect for the young French bride who was walking toward her future.

Jean-Luc stood on the top step of the church, his dusty green uniform adjusted as neatly as possible, his hand resting on the stone balustrade. He watched her approach, his chest rising and falling with a ragged, emotional breath. Every step she took over the cobblestones was a step away from the shadows of their past, and toward a life they had fought so hard to protect.

Genevieve looked at the faces of her neighbors, the children who had gathered the flowers, the soldiers who had cleared the road. She realized that this wedding did not belong only to her and Jean-Luc. It belonged to the village. It was their collective triumph over the dark, a beautiful, living proof that the spirit of Saint-Avold had survived the winter.

She reached the top step, her hand slipping into Jean-Luc’s. His grip was rough, warm, and unshakable.

"I am here," she whispered, her eyes shining.

"We are here," he replied, leading her through the open wooden doors of the sanctuary.
