Chapter 5 - THE MOUSETRAP

At precisely ten o'clock the following morning, the grand drawing room of the Kensington estate was bathed in pale winter sunlight.

Dr. Julian Harrison sat in a plush armchair, wearing a flawless tweed suit and holding a polished leather medical bag. Across from him sat Beatrice and Victoria, both wearing elegant wool dresses, sipping tea from porcelain cups. They had returned from Surrey looking victorious, believing Alexander had realized his "mistake" and brought them back to manage the family affairs.

"Alexander, darling," Beatrice said, setting her cup down with a delicate clink. "I’m glad you’ve come to your senses. Victoria and I were deeply hurt by your outburst last week, but we understand you’ve been under immense stress."

"Yes, Alexander," Victoria added smoothly. "And Dr. Harrison has brought the new quarterly batch of Iris’s specialized compound. He assures us it will help manage her condition."

Alexander stood near the fireplace, wearing a dark suit. He didn't drink tea. He didn't sit.

Grace stood near the doorway, holding a silver tray with water glasses. She wore a simple dark dress, her posture erect and calm.

"Thank you all for coming," Alexander began, his voice dangerously even. "Dr. Harrison, before you administer the new dose to my daughter, I'd like you to explain her progress to the room."

Dr. Harrison cleared his throat, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. "Ah, yes. Well, Mr. Whitmore, as I’ve explained previously, Iris’s motor-neuron decay is progressive. The compound I’ve formulated is essential to prevent painful muscular spasms. Without it, her legs would completely lock up within weeks."

"I see," Alexander said softly. "And how long has she been taking this exact bottle, Doctor?"

"This specific batch was formulated last month," Harrison replied smoothly. "She should be taking twenty milliliters every morning without fail."

Alexander turned to Grace. "Grace, bring the bottle from the nursery."

Grace stepped forward, placing a glass bottle filled with clear liquid onto the table between them.

Victoria sneered slightly at Grace. "I see you've kept the maid around, Alexander. After what happened—"

"Be quiet, Victoria," Alexander commanded without looking at her. He turned back to the doctor. "Dr. Harrison, if Iris took twenty milliliters of this exact bottle every morning for the past month, she should be completely immobile today, correct?"

"Naturally," Harrison said, beginning to look slightly uncomfortable under Alexander’s intense stare. "It is a heavy sedative compound designed to—"

"Then perhaps you can explain this," Alexander interrupted.

He tapped a button on his desk.

The double doors of the drawing room swung open.

Grace stepped aside.

Little Iris walked through the doorway.

She wasn't using her blue walker. She wasn't wearing her heavy metal leg braces. She was wearing a tiny yellow dress and red shoes.

She walked across the long Persian rug, her small feet taking confident, steady steps. She walked directly toward Alexander, holding out a wooden toy duck.

"Daddy, look!" Iris chirped happily, her voice ringing clearly through the silent room.

Beatrice dropped her teacup. It shattered on the floor, hot tea soaking into the carpet.

Victoria’s jaw dropped in absolute horror. She scrambled backward in her chair as if she had just seen a ghost.

Dr. Harrison went ghastically pale, his hands beginning to shake uncontrollably. "This... this is impossible! Her nerves—her muscle tone—"

"Her muscle tone is perfect, Doctor," Alexander said, his voice dropping an octave into a thunderous, terrifying growl. "Because for the last two months, Grace poured your poison down the sink every single morning."

"What?!" Beatrice shrieked, standing up. "Alexander, what nonsense is this?!"

"It’s not nonsense, Mother," Alexander said coldly. He pulled a thick folder from his jacket and tossed it onto the table. "That is a certified forensic toxicology report from King’s College. The bottle on this table contains illegal neuromuscular blockers used to induce paralysis."

He turned his burning gaze onto his sister and mother.

"And these," Alexander continued, sliding a second stack of documents forward, "are bank statements from the Harlow Trust. Over the past two years, four million pounds were transferred from Iris’s medical care fund into a private holding company in Jersey registered under Victoria’s name. Every time Dr. Harrison signed a report saying Iris was still disabled, he received a fifty-thousand-pound 'consulting fee.'"

Dr. Harrison leaped from his chair, grabbing his medical bag. "I—I have a medical reputation! This is slander! I am leaving!"

He turned toward the door, but the exit was already blocked.

Security Chief Miller stepped into the room, flanked by four uniformed officers from Scotland Yard.

"Dr. Julian Harrison, Beatrice Whitmore, and Victoria Whitmore," the lead Detective Chief Inspector announced, pulling out a stack of arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit severe bodily harm, child endangerment, medical malpractice, and grand fraud."

Victoria began to scream hysterically as a female officer snapped handcuffs around her wrists. "Mother! Do something! Alexander, please! We are your family!"

"You stopped being my family the moment you poisoned my daughter for money," Alexander said, his face carved from marble as he turned his back on them.

Beatrice wept bitterly as she was led away in shame, her aristocratic vanity stripped bare before the police officers. Dr. Harrison said nothing, his face hollow with the realization that his career, his title, and his freedom were gone forever.

As the police led the conspirators out of the house, the drawing room fell into a profound, peaceful silence.

Iris sat on the rug, playing with her wooden duck, completely oblivious to the dark web of greed that had just been destroyed around her.

Alexander walked over to Grace, who was standing quietly near the window, tears shining in her eyes.

He didn't say a word. He simply reached out and pulled her into a fierce, protective embrace, holding her tight against his chest.

Grace wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face in his shoulder, letting out a long, quiet sigh of relief.

"It's over, Grace," Alexander whispered into her hair, his voice rich with emotion. "They will never touch her again."
