Chapter 4 - The Traitor Beneath the Chandelier

Gunfire erupted from the upper walkways.

Sarah crawled behind a rusted machine as bullets struck metal around her. Sparks scattered across the factory floor.

“Emma!”

A child screamed somewhere in the darkness.

Emergency lamps flickered on, filling the mill with weak amber light.

Carlo Romano was no longer standing beneath the hanging lamp.

Neither was Emma.

Sarah pressed a hand to her earpiece.

“Alessandro!”

Static.

Then his voice broke through.

“Stay behind cover.”

“He has Emma.”

“I see him.”

A shot echoed from the western platform.

One of Carlo’s guards collapsed against the railing.

Alessandro’s men moved through the lower level with disciplined precision, using the old machinery as cover. Their weapons flashed in controlled bursts.

Sarah saw Marco crawling from the rear of the car.

His wrists had been loosely tied as part of the plan.

He looked toward her.

For one second, she believed he might help.

Then he drew a hidden blade, cut the remaining restraint, and ran toward a side door.

“Marco!” she shouted.

He glanced back and raised his gun.

Sarah fired first.

Her bullet struck his leg.

Marco fell hard against the concrete.

He tried to aim from the ground, but Alessandro emerged from the shadows and kicked the weapon away.

“You should have stayed bound,” Alessandro said.

Marco clutched his bleeding thigh.

“You should have died with your brother.”

Alessandro raised his pistol.

A cry came from the stairs.

“Alessandro!”

Vivian stood at the upper entrance.

Sarah stared in disbelief.

Vivian had followed them.

Her red gown had been covered by a black coat, but the bright fabric showed beneath it like blood.

Carlo appeared behind her with Emma in his grip.

His gun pressed against the child’s temple.

Everyone froze.

“Enough,” Carlo called.

The remaining gunfire stopped.

Three of his men surrounded him.

Vivian turned slowly.

“Father.”

Carlo’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to stop you.”

“You were told to remain at the villa.”

“You kidnapped a child.”

“I protected our future.”

“You destroyed it.”

Carlo laughed without humor.

“Your future was never Alessandro. Your future was the power his name would give us.”

Vivian flinched.

For years, Sarah realized, Vivian had believed she was a daughter being elevated through marriage.

In truth, she had been another weapon.

Carlo dragged Emma closer to the railing.

“Bring me the real memory card, Alessandro.”

“You already know it isn’t here?” Alessandro asked.

“I know Daniel Bennett. He would never make the exchange simple.”

Sarah moved slightly from behind the machine.

Carlo immediately aimed at her.

“Do not test me, Mrs. Bennett.”

Emma was crying silently now. Tears ran down her cheeks, but she held herself still.

Sarah’s heart broke at the sight.

“She needs her rabbit,” Sarah said.

Carlo looked almost amused.

“You think this is the time for comfort?”

“She knows the password. She only talks about it through the rabbit.”

Carlo hesitated.

Sarah lifted the toy.

“Let me bring it to her.”

Alessandro understood her intention.

His eyes met hers.

A warning.

Or permission.

She could not tell.

Carlo waved his gun.

“Come slowly.”

Sarah stepped from cover.

The mill seemed impossibly large and silent.

She moved toward the metal staircase, holding the rabbit in both hands.

At the bottom, one of Carlo’s guards searched her.

He missed the small pistol secured beneath the rabbit’s loose stuffing.

Sarah had hidden it there before entering.

The guard motioned her upward.

Each step rang beneath her shoes.

When she reached the platform, Emma strained toward her.

“Mommy.”

“I’m here, baby.”

Carlo blocked her.

“The rabbit.”

Sarah extended it.

Emma reached out.

Carlo took the toy first.

He pressed the folded ear, searching for the hidden capsule.

“It’s empty.”

“The card is in my pocket,” Sarah said.

His gaze snapped to her.

The guard had already searched her dress.

Carlo reached forward.

Sarah lowered her voice.

“Mr. Bunny heard Daniel’s last secret.”

Carlo stopped.

“What secret?”

“That you were not the leader.”

The words had an immediate effect.

His face tightened.

Behind him, Marco shouted from the lower floor.

“Don’t listen to her!”

Carlo looked down.

That was all Sarah needed.

She pulled the pistol from the rabbit and fired into the shoulder of the man holding Emma.

The guard fell backward.

Sarah grabbed her daughter and dropped to the platform.

Alessandro fired from below.

Carlo’s second guard spun and collapsed.

Vivian struck her father’s arm as he aimed at Sarah. The bullet tore into the railing.

Carlo slapped Vivian so hard she fell.

Alessandro raced up the stairs despite his wounded shoulder.

Carlo seized Emma’s dress.

Sarah kicked his knee.

The mafia patriarch staggered, but his grip held.

Vivian rose behind him and drove a broken piece of railing into his forearm.

Carlo roared and released Emma.

Sarah pulled her daughter close.

Alessandro reached the platform and struck Carlo across the jaw.

The older man crashed against the metal railing.

For several seconds, the two men fought with brutal silence.

Carlo was older but desperate. Alessandro was wounded but relentless.

Below, the remaining guards surrendered as Moretti men surrounded them.

Marco dragged himself toward a fallen weapon.

Emma saw him.

“Mommy!”

Sarah turned.

Marco aimed at Alessandro’s back.

Vivian moved first.

She stepped between them.

The shot struck her below the ribs.

She gasped and collapsed.

Alessandro spun and fired.

Marco fell motionless.

Carlo stared at his daughter.

For the first time, horror broke through his arrogance.

“Vivian.”

He turned toward her.

Alessandro struck him and forced him to the ground.

Sarah crawled to Vivian while holding Emma against her side.

Blood spread across the red gown, nearly invisible against its fabric.

Vivian looked at Sarah.

“I didn’t know,” she whispered.

“Stay still.”

“I didn’t know he would hurt the child.”

Sarah pressed both hands against the wound.

“You can explain later.”

Vivian’s eyes moved to Emma.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma clutched the rabbit.

“You were mean.”

A faint, broken laugh escaped Vivian.

“Yes.”

“But you saved me.”

Vivian’s eyes filled.

Perhaps no one had ever said those words to her.

Alessandro knelt beside them.

“Medical team is coming.”

Vivian looked up at him.

“You will never forgive me.”

“No.”

The answer was honest.

“But you will live long enough to earn forgiveness from others.”

Carlo struggled beneath the guards.

“You would protect her after she betrayed you?”

Alessandro stood.

“She is not the one who betrayed me.”

Carlo sneered.

“You still don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don’t. Daniel discovered only half the truth.”

Sarah looked toward him.

“What does that mean?”

Carlo laughed, even as blood ran from his mouth.

“You think I controlled Marco? Marco controlled me.”

Alessandro’s face hardened.

“Marco is dead.”

“Then the real leader has already won.”

Sarah remembered her words moments earlier.

You were not the leader.

She had invented them to distract Carlo.

But they had been true.

“Who is it?” Alessandro demanded.

Carlo smiled.

“The man who has sat beside your family for thirty years.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Don Ricci.”

Carlo shook his head.

“Too obvious.”

“Bellini?”

“Too ambitious.”

“Who?”

Carlo looked toward Emma’s rabbit.

“Daniel recorded the name. But he divided the evidence.”

Sarah frowned.

“The memory card contains everything.”

“No. It contains what Daniel wanted you to find first.”

“What is missing?”

“The second file.”

“Where is it?”

Carlo’s smile widened.

“Inside the child.”

Sarah’s blood turned cold.

“What did you say?”

“Not physically,” Carlo replied. “Daniel gave her the final code. A phrase. A song. Something only she remembers.”

Alessandro looked at Emma.

The little girl buried her face against Sarah.

“Blue moon,” Sarah whispered. “Little star. Safe harbor.”

Carlo laughed.

“That opens the first layer.”

“What opens the second?”

“I don’t know.”

Alessandro crouched before him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Marco never told me. He said the child would reveal it when she saw the rabbit’s other eye.”

Sarah looked down at the toy.

One eye was a black button.

The other had been embroidered by Daniel after the original fell off.

She touched the embroidered eye.

Beneath the thread was something hard.

A second compartment.

Sirens approached outside.

Alessandro’s medical team entered the mill. They carried Vivian away while guards secured Carlo.

Sarah sat on the platform holding Emma.

The little girl trembled against her.

“I want to go home.”

“I know.”

“Will the bad men come?”

“No.”

Sarah did not know whether it was true.

But mothers sometimes had to build safety from words when nothing else remained.

Alessandro knelt beside them.

His black shirt was torn, and blood had begun seeping through the bandage at his shoulder.

Emma looked at him.

“You got hurt.”

“So did you.”

“I’m not bleeding.”

“Not all wounds bleed.”

She considered this with the seriousness only a child could possess.

Then she held out Mr. Bunny.

“You can look at his eye.”

Alessandro glanced at Sarah.

She nodded.

He carefully cut the embroidered threads.

Inside was a tiny strip of paper protected by wax.

Only four words were written on it.

THE KING HAS TWO SHADOWS.

Beneath the sentence was a date.

The night Alessandro’s father and brother had died.

Alessandro read it twice.

“What does it mean?” Sarah asked.

His expression became distant.

“My father used to call his two most trusted advisers his shadows.”

“Who were they?”

“Marco.”

“And the other?”

May you like

Alessandro looked toward the mill entrance, where Don Ricci had just arrived surrounded by armed men.

“The other was him.”
