Chapter 6 - The Husband Who Returned from the Dead

Sarah could not move.

Daniel stood thirty feet away, thinner than memory and changed by suffering, but unmistakably alive. His dark hair had grown to his shoulders. A scar crossed one side of his forehead. Chains bound his wrists.

Yet his eyes were the same.

Warm brown.

Gentle.

Home.

“Daniel.”

His name escaped her as a broken breath.

He took one unsteady step.

A guard jerked him backward.

Sarah ran.

Alessandro caught her before she reached the center aisle.

“Wait.”

“That is my husband!”

“That is why Lucien brought him out.”

Daniel shook his head urgently.

“Sarah, don’t give him anything!”

Lucien smiled from before the altar.

“Still loyal after all this time.”

Sarah fought Alessandro’s hold.

“Let me go.”

“Not yet.”

“You promised to help me find him.”

“I promised to bring him home alive.”

Lucien clapped slowly.

“My nephew has finally learned patience.”

Alessandro released Sarah but remained between her and the altar.

“You have Daniel,” he said. “We have the card.”

“A simple exchange.”

“There is nothing simple about two years of torture.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Sarah saw the bruises around his wrists and the way he favored one leg.

Rage overcame shock.

“You kept him here?”

“Not always,” Lucien replied. “San Celeste is one of several quiet locations.”

“Why?”

“He encrypted records I required.”

“I told you nothing,” Daniel said.

Lucien glanced at him.

“You told me more through resistance than cooperation.”

Alessandro surveyed the chapel.

Lucien had at least eight armed men visible.

Probably more hidden.

Ricci stood behind them, silent.

Sarah held the blue rabbit.

The original memory card was concealed inside a lead-lined case in Alessandro’s jacket.

At least, that was what Lucien believed.

In truth, the data had already been copied and distributed to three secure locations. If Alessandro failed to enter a cancellation code by sunrise, the files would be sent to prosecutors, journalists, and rival families.

Lucien could not be told.

Not yet.

“Release Daniel,” Alessandro said.

“Give me the card.”

“Send him halfway.”

Lucien considered it.

Then he signaled.

The guards pushed Daniel down the aisle until he reached the center of the chapel.

Sarah’s entire body ached to touch him.

Daniel looked at her cheek.

“Who hurt you?”

A laugh burst from her through tears.

“You have been imprisoned for two years, and that is what you ask?”

“Who?”

“Vivian Romano.”

Daniel looked toward Lucien.

“Your family always did raise cowards.”

Lucien’s smile vanished.

“Still sharp.”

Alessandro removed the metal case.

Lucien lifted one hand.

A guard pressed a gun against Daniel’s neck.

“Place it on the floor.”

Alessandro obeyed.

“Kick it forward.”

The case slid across the stone tiles.

It stopped near Daniel.

Lucien’s guard moved toward it.

Daniel suddenly kicked the case beneath a pew.

Alessandro drew his gun.

The chapel exploded into motion.

Sarah dropped behind a column.

Ricci fired toward the balcony, striking a hidden shooter before the man could aim.

Alessandro reached Daniel and shot through the chain connecting his wrists.

Lucien vanished behind the altar.

Sarah crawled toward her husband.

One of the guards seized her hair.

She struck backward with the rabbit, the metal capsule inside its head connecting with his temple. The man loosened his grip.

Sarah turned and drove her knee into his stomach.

He fell.

Daniel reached her.

For one impossible second, they simply stared.

Then he pulled her into his arms.

She felt how thin he had become.

He buried his face in her hair.

“I’m sorry.”

She struck his chest with both hands.

“You were alive.”

“I tried to escape.”

“You were alive!”

“I know.”

She hit him again, then clung to him.

He held her so tightly she could barely breathe.

“Emma?” he asked.

“She’s safe.”

His entire body shook.

“She remembers me?”

“She talks to your rabbit every day.”

He looked at the toy.

“You found the files.”

“They found us.”

Alessandro shouted from the altar.

“Move!”

A bullet struck the column beside them.

Daniel pulled Sarah toward a side passage.

Ricci and the Moretti guards covered their retreat.

They entered the underground crypt, where stone stairs descended into darkness.

Daniel knew the tunnels.

He had been held there for months.

“This way.”

They moved through narrow corridors lined with ancient burial chambers.

Alessandro caught up, bleeding again from his shoulder.

“Where is Lucien?”

“Heading for the eastern exit,” Daniel replied. “There is an airfield beyond the trees.”

A muffled explosion shook dust from the ceiling.

“He is destroying the chapel,” Ricci said.

“He is destroying evidence,” Daniel corrected.

They reached a fork.

Daniel pointed left.

“The exit.”

Alessandro looked right.

“Lucien?”

“Yes.”

Sarah grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“We are getting out.”

Daniel looked toward the right passage.

“If Lucien escapes, he will come for Emma.”

“Then Alessandro can stop him.”

“I helped build the encryption. Lucien needs me alive, but he needs Emma to unlock the final archive.”

Sarah stared.

“What final archive?”

“The names of every official and family member under his control.”

“The second code.”

Daniel nodded.

“I taught it to Emma through a song.”

“Blue moon, little star, safe harbor?”

“That was only the first phrase.”

“What is the rest?”

Daniel looked at the rabbit.

“Home is where the brave heart waits.”

Sarah remembered singing those words after his death.

Emma had sometimes corrected her.

Not waits, Mommy. Wakes.

“Emma says ‘wakes,’” Sarah whispered.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Because I changed it before the fire.”

“To what?”

“Home is where the brave heart wakes.”

Alessandro understood first.

“Initial letters.”

B-M-L-S-S-H-I-W-T-B-H-W.

Daniel shook his head.

“Not letters. Positions in the lullaby. The numbers identify account ledgers.”

“We can decode it later,” Sarah said.

“No. Lucien has a transmitter. If he reaches the airfield, he can wipe the servers.”

Alessandro checked his weapon.

“I will follow him.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You do not know the tunnel.”

“Then guide me.”

Sarah blocked them.

“No.”

Both men looked at her.

“I lost my husband for two years because he decided to protect me without telling me the truth. I will not stand quietly while he disappears again.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I was trying to keep you safe.”

“You left me alone with a baby, debt, and a body I was never allowed to bury.”

“I did not choose imprisonment.”

“You chose the secrets before it.”

He lowered his eyes.

She took his face in her hands.

“I understand why. But I am still angry.”

“You should be.”

“And I am coming with you.”

Alessandro began to object.

Sarah held up the rabbit.

“Emma’s code is inside my memory. You need me.”

They followed the right tunnel.

It emerged near an old bell tower behind the monastery. Through the trees, they saw Lucien moving toward a waiting helicopter.

Three armed men protected him.

Ricci’s remaining guards approached from the opposite side.

Lucien saw them and fired.

Ricci fell behind a stone wall.

Alessandro and Daniel returned fire.

Sarah crouched near the tower, trying to recall every line of Daniel’s lullaby.

Blue moon over quiet water.

Little star above the shore.

Safe harbor holds the traveler.

Home is where the brave heart wakes.

The first letters formed BLSH.

Four ledger groups.

The numbers were hidden in syllables.

Two.

Two.

Three.

Seven.

She shouted them to Daniel.

“Two-two-three-seven!”

He used a stolen phone to access the server.

Lucien heard.

His face twisted.

“Stop them!”

One guard ran toward Sarah.

She raised the pistol and fired.

The shot struck his arm.

He fell behind the trees.

Daniel entered the sequence.

The screen displayed FINAL ARCHIVE UNLOCKED.

Then another message appeared.

UPLOAD SCHEDULED.

Lucien’s entire network was being transmitted.

He screamed and charged toward them.

Alessandro met him beside the stone wall.

Uncle and nephew fought beneath the dying light.

Lucien was older, but hatred gave him strength. He drove a knife into Alessandro’s side.

Sarah screamed.

Alessandro gripped Lucien’s wrist and forced the blade free.

Daniel tackled Lucien from behind.

All three men fell near the edge of the hillside.

Lucien pulled a second gun.

Ricci fired from the ground.

The bullet struck Lucien’s chest.

The older man staggered.

He looked at Ricci with disbelief.

“My shadow,” he whispered.

Ricci lowered the weapon.

“I was never yours.”

Lucien fell over the edge.

His body disappeared among the rocks below.

The helicopter pilot surrendered.

The remaining men dropped their weapons when phones across the organization began ringing.

The files had been released.

Evidence of decades of betrayal was now beyond anyone’s control.

Alessandro collapsed against the wall.

Sarah pressed her hands over the wound in his side.

“You are not allowed to die.”

A weak smile touched his mouth.

“You give orders like a Moretti.”

“I have spent the evening surrounded by bad examples.”

Daniel knelt beside them.

“He needs surgery.”

The Moretti medical team arrived minutes later.

As they carried Alessandro away, he gripped Daniel’s wrist.

“Emma believes you were brave.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I was afraid every day.”

“That is what made it bravery.”

Sarah and Daniel rode together in the medical vehicle.

They held hands but said little.

Too much stood between them.

Love.

Anger.

Loss.

A life that had continued without him.

When they reached the safe residence, Emma was waiting by the window.

Sarah entered first.

The little girl ran into her arms.

Then she saw Daniel behind her.

She became very still.

He knelt slowly.

“Hello, little star.”

Emma stared.

Sarah held her breath.

Daniel began humming the lullaby.

Blue moon over quiet water.

Emma’s eyes widened.

“Daddy?”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

She ran to him.

Daniel caught her and sobbed into her curls.

Sarah watched them beneath the warm hallway light, one hand covering her mouth.

For two years, she had imagined a thousand impossible miracles.

None had looked like this.

Emma pulled back and touched Daniel’s beard.

“You got scratchy.”

He laughed through tears.

“I did.”

“Mr. Bunny found you.”

“He always was a good assistant.”

Emma held the toy between them.

Daniel noticed the opened seams and missing stitches.

“What happened to him?”

Sarah sat beside them.

“It is a very long story.”

Emma nodded seriously.

“Bad people took me. Mr. Moretti got hurt. The red lady was mean, but then she saved me. Mommy shot the floor.”

Daniel looked at Sarah.

“You shot the floor?”

“She is leaving out several important details.”

For the first time in two years, they laughed together.

But outside the room, Alessandro’s doctors fought to save his life.

And before sunrise, news arrived that three families named in Lucien’s files had rejected Moretti authority.

War was coming to Milan.
